What a whip pole is
A whip is a short, fixed-line fishing pole. The line is connected to the pole instead of running to a reel, so you present bait accurately beside the bank, along a canal edge or in another close-range location. Because the line length limits your reach, choosing a productive, safe peg matters more than making a long cast.
The Canal & River Trust’s rig guide describes attaching a ready-made rig to the whip. Its float shows bites, while the weights balance the float and help the bait settle.
What goes on a whip fishing rig

A ready-made float rig is the simplest starting point because these parts are already assembled. If you build your own, select components for the venue and target species; the instructional sources do not establish one universal hook size, line strength, bait or fishing depth.

How to set up and fish the whip
- Choose a peg. Find a flat, stable position with enough room to handle the pole. Look for cover or other habitat where fish may hold, and keep the fishing area close enough that the fixed line can reach it.
- Attach the rig. Secure the rig’s line to the pole tip using the connection supplied with the pole or rig. Check that the float, weights and hook are all firmly attached.
- Bait the hook. Use bait appropriate to the fishery and permitted by its rules. Keep the hook covered securely without making the presentation unnecessarily bulky.
- Position the float. Set the rig so the weights hold the float upright and the bait fishes at the depth you intend. Make a quiet test placement before committing to the spot.
- Swing or lower the rig out. A cane-pole example from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shows the angler facing the bank, holding the pole at roughly 45 degrees, swinging the line into the water and lowering the tip at the end. That angle is an example, not a compulsory position for every whip.
- Hold and watch. Keep the pole under control and watch the float continuously. Avoid dragging the rig through the swim unless you are deliberately repositioning it.
- Respond to a bite. A float may twitch, slide, tilt or go underwater. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Beginners Fishing Guide illustrates movement or submergence as a bite signal. Lift the pole smoothly when the indication is convincing rather than striking violently.
- Bring the fish in. Keep steady pressure and guide the fish toward the bank without swinging it into people, obstructions or shallow ground. Handle and release it according to the fishery’s rules.
Where to fish safely
On a canal, fish from a clear, level peg and keep all equipment within easy reach. Do not block the towpath; watch for pedestrians and cyclists as you handle the pole.

- swing bridges and other active infrastructure;
- overhead powerlines; and
- positions directly beside boats.
Look up before raising a long pole, and move to a different peg if the bank is unstable, crowded or too close to moving craft.

Choose the whip when the fishable water is close and you value quiet, accurate placement. Choose a reel-and-rod arrangement when distance, changing range or the need to let line out is central to the venue.

Licences and permission
Fishing regulations depend on the country, water and fishery. As a UK example, the Canal & River Trust states that anglers on its canals need a rod licence from age 12 as well as permission from the fishery owner or angling club. Check the current licence, closed-season, bait and access requirements for your specific water before setting up.
