Use lubina for European sea bass, lubina rayada for striped bass, and a species-specific term for freshwater bass. If you simply mean sea bass in a restaurant, lubina is usually the useful answer—but identify the species when accuracy matters.
Spanish names depend on which bass you mean
English uses “bass” for several unrelated or only distantly related fish. Spanish names therefore follow the fish’s species, habitat, and sometimes the country or industry using the term. Spain’s official commercial denomination list, adopted in a resolution dated 27 May 2026, lists European sea bass and striped bass separately.
| Fish intended | Spanish label | What the term covers |
|---|---|---|
| European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) | lubina; also róbalo | Spain’s official commercial list gives “lubina o róbalo.” A Galician catalog also records robalo and regional forms such as robaliza and furagaña. |
| Striped bass (Morone saxatilis) | lubina rayada | Used in Spain’s list; the FDA’s English–Spanish fish-name list gives “lubina rayada (del mar)” for ocean striped bass. |
| Black bass | róbalo negro | A bilingual fishing-terminology guide uses this label as an industry vocabulary term. |
| Largemouth bass | lobina negra | The same guide distinguishes this species from the broader “black bass” entry. |
| Chilean sea bass (Patagonian toothfish) | perca de mar chilena or merluza negra | This is a different fish that is marketed with “sea bass” in English. |
How to say the common phrases
“How do you say bass fish in Spanish?”
A safe short answer is: “Bass fish can be lubina if you mean sea bass; which species do you mean?” That avoids presenting one word as a universal translation.
“How do you say sea bass in Spanish?”
When the intended fish is European sea bass, say lubina. For example, “I ordered sea bass” can be Pedí lubina. If you mean another fish sold as “sea bass,” name that species instead.

“How do you say striped bass in Spanish?”
Say lubina rayada. The parenthetical del mar (“of the sea”) appears in the FDA terminology for ocean striped bass.
Why “róbalo” and “lobina” need context
Róbalo is not a guaranteed one-to-one equivalent of every English bass. Spain’s commercial list allows róbalo for European sea bass, while a Mexican federal standard uses robalo prieto and robalo blanco for two Centropomus species. Those official names show why the bare word can be ambiguous across locations.

Likewise, lobina negra and róbalo negro come from a fishing vocabulary guide updated in 2014, not from a universal dictionary rule used in every Spanish-speaking region. If you are buying fish, reporting a catch, or discussing biology, add the scientific name, habitat, or location.
Choosing the clearest term
- Restaurant or fish market: say lubina for European sea bass, or use the full species name if the menu could be ambiguous.
- Sport-fishing conversation: specify lubina rayada, róbalo negro, or lobina negra rather than saying only bass.
- Scientific or legal identification: include the Latin name, because common names vary by country and fishery.
- Translation without species information: ask whether the speaker means marine sea bass, striped bass, or a freshwater black bass.
The Bottom Line
Use lubina for European sea bass, lubina rayada for striped bass, and a species-specific freshwater term such as lobina negra or róbalo negro. “Bass” alone is too broad for a reliably precise Spanish translation.
