Truman Lake in Missouri holds crappie, blue, channel and flathead catfish, hybrid striped bass, white bass, walleye, paddlefish and largemouth bass. The best target depends on the season and location: crappie use brush and timber, catfish occupy channels and flats, and several predators follow shad around points and humps. Missouri State Parks also highlights crappie, black bass, catfish and white bass among the lake’s principal catch groups.
Fish species you can catch at Truman Lake
The Missouri Department of Conservation’s 2026 outlook describes opportunities for a wide range of species at Truman Lake. The main targets include:
- Crappie: white and black crappie.
- Catfish: blue, channel and flathead catfish.
- Bass: hybrid striped bass, white bass and largemouth bass.
- Other game fish: walleye and paddlefish.

Where and when to target each fish
Crappie: brush, timber and changing depths
White crappie dominate the upper, more turbid reservoir. Black crappie account for a larger share in clearer lower-lake water and in the Pomme de Terre and Tebo arms.

- Spring: Look in pockets and along gravel banks as crappie move shallow. Jigs or minnows are suitable presentations.
- Summer: Check standing timber, brush piles and bluff edges near creek channels.
- Fall and winter: Follow fish deeper toward channel edges and timber. Large schools can form in midwinter.
The 2026 outlook reports a strong group of 6- to 8-inch white crappie from the 2024 spawn, expected to begin exceeding 9 inches in 2026. These are outlook figures, not a guarantee of an individual fish’s size.
Blue, channel and flathead catfish: channels, flats and bait
All three catfish species are available, and the 2026 outlook describes catfish fishing as excellent across the lake. Blue catfish are abundant. In cold weather, look for them around deep bends and channel holes; in warmer or high-water conditions, flats, humps, channel edges, flooded areas and vegetation can hold fish.

Smaller blue catfish under 15 inches have increased, likely because of a productive 2019 year class. The department notes slower growth and encourages anglers to harvest blue catfish under 20 inches where regulations allow. Channel catfish respond to worms and prepared catfish bait. Anglers seeking flatheads commonly use live bait near timbered flats, creek channels and old fencerows.
Hybrid striped bass and white bass: follow the shad
Hybrid striped bass and white bass chase shad around humps, points and flats. Current near Truman Dam can concentrate fish on predictable structure. In warm weather, the department lists topwater baits, crankbaits, drifting live shad and jigging spoons as options.

The 2026 outlook says successful hybrid-striped-bass year classes since 2019 are contributing many fish in the low-to-mid-20-inch range. That describes the outlook, not a minimum or guaranteed catch size.
Walleye: arms in spring, structure in summer
The upper Osage, Pomme de Terre and Sac arms are consistent areas to try in late winter and early spring. In summer, walleye use gravel points, humps and channel-edge structure. Crankbaits, slow live-bait presentations and jigging spoons are among the department’s suggested options.

The 2026 outlook reports strong year classes dating back to 2019, with good numbers reaching the low-20-inch range.
Paddlefish: a spring snagging fishery
Paddlefish move with rising temperatures and flow. For much of the spring season, the upper Osage from Talley Bend toward Taberville is identified as the most productive stretch. The department describes the population as strong and reports that a tagging project begun in 2025 continues into 2026. Check current season dates and snagging rules before fishing.

Largemouth bass: coves, cover and seasonal patterns
Largemouth bass use coves, pockets, vegetation, timber and brush piles. Productive areas identified by the department include the lower South Grand Arm, the Osage Arm from Talley Bend to the dam, and the Pomme de Terre and Tebo arms. The outlook notes that largemouth numbers and quality remain lower than at some other large Missouri reservoirs.
- Late winter and early spring: Try suspending jerkbaits.
- As fish move shallow: Spinnerbaits and jigs are options.
- Summer: Work topwater early and late; try deeper jigs or large plastics after sunrise.
- Fall: Look in creeks and coves with crankbaits or spinnerbaits.
Current size and daily limits
Limits can vary by species and regulation updates, so consult the current Missouri Department of Conservation Truman Lake regulations before keeping fish. The 2026 information lists these rules:
- Crappie: daily limit of 15, with a 9-inch minimum.
- Black bass: 15-inch minimum for largemouth and smallmouth bass; 12-inch minimum for spotted bass.
- Blue catfish: includes a protected slot from 26 to 34 inches. Check the regulation page for the full limit and how the slot applies.
- Paddlefish: 34-inch minimum.
These are not a complete list of every regulation. Confirm the current rules for the species, season and water you plan to fish.
