Real Plants vs. Plastic Plants: Which Is Better for Your Fish Tank?

Live plants offer nutrient uptake and habitat, while aquarium-safe artificial plants can be more practical for fish that dig or eat them. The right choice depends on your tank and its inhabitants.

Neither live plants nor plastic plants are best for every aquarium. Live plants can take up some nutrients and provide habitat, but they need lighting and conditions suited to their species. Aquarium-safe artificial plants can offer useful cover when fish dig up or eat live plants, or when dim light or strong water movement makes growing them difficult. Whichever you choose, keep up routine aquarium care and make sure décor is safe for your fish.

What live plants can—and can’t—do

Live aquatic plants use carbon dioxide and produce oxygen during the day. They can also take up nitrate and phosphate, while providing cover, habitat, and in some cases food or spawning surfaces. These are useful contributions, not a substitute for filtration, water testing, or water changes. Aqueon’s aquatic plant guide describes these functions and recommends choosing plants with the aquarium’s conditions in mind.

Plant requirements vary. Some species need more intense light than others, so match the plant to the tank’s actual lighting rather than assuming any live plant will thrive there. Research the needs of the species you plan to keep; lighting and other care needs depend on that choice.

Do fish need live plants for cover?

No. Cover can help fish feel secure and support natural activity, but it does not have to be living. RSPCA Australia’s tropical-fish care guidance says some fish need plant cover to reduce stress and facilitate activity, and notes that artificial plants can be as effective as real plants for stress reduction. That is general care guidance, not a guarantee of identical outcomes for every species or behavior.

When artificial plants may suit the tank better

Plastic or other artificial plants can be a practical choice when fish dig up or eat live plants. Fluval’s plant FAQ identifies those behaviors as reasons artificial plants may suit some fish and other aquarium inhabitants. Artificial greenery may also work better in a dimly lit tank or one with strong water movement, according to Fishkeeper’s comparison.

Amazon Sword - Echinodorus Bleheri x3 Plants - Live Aquarium Plant
  • Echinodorus bleheri from South America is undemanding and beautiful, and becomes 20-50 cm tall.
  • A nutritious bottom promotes growth, but the plant needs pruning to prevent it depriving plants underneath of light.
  • Echinodorus bleheri does well even in poorly illuminated aquariums, as it grows towards the light. It is a hardy and easy solitary plant for both beginners and the more experienced with quite large aquariums. It has been sold under the name "Paniculatus".

These advantages are about compatibility and practicality; artificial plants do not perform the nutrient uptake or daytime gas exchange of live plants. Choose aquarium-suitable décor and inspect the entire item before putting it in the tank. RSPCA Australia advises buying plastic plants from an aquarium store and avoiding rough or sharp edges and small holes that could trap a fish.

How the options compare

Consideration Live plants Artificial plants
Water and nutrients Use carbon dioxide and produce oxygen during the day; can take up nitrate and phosphate. They do not replace routine aquarium maintenance. Do not provide these plant functions.
Cover Can provide habitat and cover. Can provide cover; RSPCA Australia says they can be as effective as real plants for stress reduction in its tropical-fish care guidance.
Fish behavior May be difficult to keep with fish that dig up or eat plants. May be more practical with fish or other inhabitants that dig or eat live plants.
Lighting and water movement Suitability depends on the plant species and available conditions; some need more intense light. May be useful in dimly lit tanks or tanks with strong water movement.
Safety checks Choose plants appropriate for the aquarium and its inhabitants. Inspect for sharp or rough edges and small gaps where fish could become trapped.

What the evidence says about welfare and water quality

A 2022 study of home aquariums compared water quality and bacterial presence across tank enrichment and substrate treatments, including plastic plants. It describes structural enrichment as refuge, but its particular setup does not establish that live or plastic plants universally produce better water quality or welfare. The study’s methods and findings should be read in the context of the treatments it actually tested.

How to choose and set up plants safely

  1. Start with the fish. Consider whether they dig, eat plants, or need places to hide, and choose a layout that suits their behavior.
  2. Check the tank conditions. For live plants, match the species to the light and other conditions in your aquarium; some plants need more intense light.
  3. Choose aquarium-suitable décor. If using artificial plants, buy products intended for aquariums and inspect all surfaces and openings for rough edges, sharp points, or fish-trapping gaps.
  4. Keep regular care in place. Plants do not remove the need for filtration, water testing, or water changes.
