Best Aquarium Plants for Shallow Water: Compact Freshwater Choices That Fit

Anubias nana, Java fern and Cryptocoryne wendtii are practical shallow-tank choices—but each has different attachment, substrate and space requirements.

For a shallow freshwater aquarium, begin with compact rhizome plants—especially Anubias barteri var. nana and Java fern—that can be attached to wood or stone without consuming much vertical space. Add a suitable Cryptocoryne where the footprint and substrate allow rooted growth. The best choice depends on your tank’s actual depth and footprint, light, substrate, waterline and whether leaves may grow above the surface.

Which plants suit a shallow aquarium?

Shallow tanks create two separate design issues: limited vertical clearance and, often, a small planting footprint. Rhizome plants are useful because they can sit on hardscape rather than requiring a deep bed of substrate. Rooted rosette plants can also work, but need dedicated substrate space for their crowns and roots.

Aqueon identifies tank size and light intensity as key plant-selection factors. Use those variables, rather than a universal height cut-off, to choose plants for your particular aquarium: Aqueon’s aquarium-plant selection guidance.

Shortlist at a glance

Plant Why consider it Placement and caveat
Anubias barteri var. nana Compact, slow-growing and listed by Tropica as a 5–10 cm plant with low light and low CO2 demands. Attach to stone or wood. Keep the rhizome exposed; covering it can cause rot. Tropica plant profile
Java fern (Microsorum pteropus) A practical low-light rhizome option included in Tropica’s low-light Layout 91. Plan to attach it to hardscape rather than bury its rhizome. Tropica Layout 91
Cryptocoryne wendtii Provides rooted foliage and is used in Tropica’s low-light layout. Reserve substrate space for its rosette, roots and crown; it is not a hardscape epiphyte. Tropica Layout 91 Tropica planting guide

How to choose among them

Match mature size to the tank footprint

Measure usable floor area and the distance from substrate to the waterline. A plant that fits a store container may occupy more horizontal space as it produces leaves. In a very narrow tank, one or two attached specimens may be more practical than a broad rooted group.

Decide between attachment and substrate planting

  • Attachment: Anubias and Java fern are rhizome plants. Secure them to stone or wood while leaving the rhizome visible.
  • Substrate: Cryptocoryne is a rooted rosette plant. Give its crown room and avoid treating it like an attached epiphyte.

Use the available light realistically

Tropica’s 96 L Layout 91 uses Microsorum pteropus, Anubias and Cryptocoryne wendtii as low-light choices. “Low light” does not mean no light: observe the plant’s response and avoid selecting solely by the tank’s shallow depth.

Plan for growth speed and maintenance

Anubias nana grows slowly and its leaves are long-lived, so it is a steady accent rather than a fast way to cover a tank. Java fern and Cryptocoryne also need room for new leaves; leave access for removing damaged foliage and cleaning around the plant.

Check whether foliage must stay underwater

If the aquarium is open-top or operated with a low waterline, determine whether the plant will remain submerged or can extend above it. The cited sources support the listed plants for freshwater layouts, but do not establish a universal emersed-growth height or paludarium compatibility for every variety.

Planting shallow tanks without damaging plants

“Shallow water” can describe a temporary setup method rather than permanent operating depth. Tropica recommends working with only a few centimetres of water in the tank, keeping plants damp during arranging, then refilling carefully. Follow its species-specific planting distinctions for stem, rosette and rhizome plants: Tropica’s planting guide.

What to expect after planting

Many aquarium plants are cultivated above water before sale. Aquarium Co-Op explains that emersed-grown leaves may die back as a plant adapts to submerged conditions, so some leaf loss can occur after planting: Aquarium Co-Op’s planting guidance. Do not assume every specimen will react identically or that all dieback is harmless; remove clearly deteriorating material and watch for healthy new growth.

Anubias nana placement warning

Tropica specifically warns that Anubias nana’s rhizome tends to rot if covered. Tie or glue the plant to a suitable stone or root according to the attachment product’s directions, and keep the thick horizontal stem exposed.
