Yes. Fish tank water and aquarium equipment can carry germs that may make people sick, although illness is considered rare. Washing your hands, wearing gloves—especially over cuts—and preventing splashes can reduce exposure. Children under five and people with weakened immune systems should not clean aquariums.
How can cleaning an aquarium expose you to germs?
Germs may be present in aquarium water, gravel, decorations, filters, and other equipment, even when the fish look healthy. Exposure can happen when contaminated water or equipment touches broken skin, or when water splashes onto skin or nearby surfaces.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says millions of U.S. households keep aquarium fish and that illness is possible but rare. Its guidance does not give a population percentage or annual count for people who become ill specifically from cleaning home tanks.
What illnesses are associated with pet fish?
CDC lists several infections associated with pet fish, including mycobacteriosis (often called fish-tank granuloma), Salmonella infection, aeromoniasis, and vibriosis. Its list also includes infections caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, Edwardsiella, Erysipelothrix, Klebsiella, and Streptococcus iniae. These are possible associations, not a prediction that routine tank cleaning will cause illness.

Skin infections caused by Mycobacterium marinum have been described in people with home aquariums. CDC also reported a U.S. case of melioidosis linked to a freshwater home aquarium. These examples show that aquarium-associated infections can occur; they do not establish how often people become sick while cleaning a tank.
Who should avoid cleaning a fish tank?
- Children younger than five: They should not clean aquariums.
- People with weakened immune systems: They should avoid direct contact with fish tanks and aerosols from them. When possible, have another household member handle cleaning.
What should you wear and do to clean a fish tank safely?
- Wash your hands with soap and running water before and after handling fish, tank water, gravel, decorations, filters, or other aquarium equipment. Wash before eating or drinking, too.
- Wear gloves while cleaning or caring for the aquarium, especially if you have cuts or wounds, or will handle rough rocks or spiny fish. Cover cuts with gloves; when practical, wait until wounds heal before cleaning.
- Keep splashes under control. Keep aquarium water away from food and food-preparation areas.
- Dispose of tank water away from the kitchen. When possible, empty it into a bathtub, laundry sink, or outdoors rather than a kitchen sink. Clean and disinfect the fixture afterward.
- Wash your hands again after the task, even if you wore gloves.
When should you seek medical advice?
If you develop a persistent or worsening skin lesion, fever, diarrhea, or other symptoms after aquarium exposure, seek medical advice and tell the clinician about the fish tank. CDC’s aquarium guidance identifies exposure risks but does not provide a symptom-triage protocol, so a clinician can assess your situation.
