The best pet substitute depends on what the recipient misses: touch, a daily care ritual, a visible presence, play, or real contact with animals and people. Robotic and digital pets can make companionship easier in homes that prohibit animals, but they do not reproduce the bond with a living pet. Choose for the person’s housing rules, allergies, mobility, noise tolerance, comfort with technology and willingness to maintain batteries or charging.

Match the gift to the kind of companionship they want

What they want Strongest matches Main trade-off
Something to hold, stroke and hear Joy for All, responsive plush, other companion robots Battery replacement, sound and limited conversation
A small daily responsibility Tamagotchi or another digital-pet keychain No fur or physical contact
Deep, programmable interaction Sony Aibo High cost, charging, connectivity and privacy considerations
A calm therapy-oriented presence PARO or a stationary companion robot Availability and suitability should be assessed with carers or clinicians
Real animal contact Volunteering, fostering, pet-sitting or scheduled visits Requires travel, time and another person’s or organization’s agreement
A quiet visual hobby Pet collectible, model or plant-care gift These offer interest or routine, not an animal relationship

11 alternatives to a living dog or cat

1. Joy for All robotic cat or dog: best for tactile comfort without litter

Joy for All companions are designed to be stroked and held. Gizmodo’s 2021 description reported realistic fur, touch-dependent responses, purring and cuddling behavior, plus a sleep mode. That makes this the closest match for someone who mainly wants warmth, texture and a responsive sound rather than a screen.

  • Care burden: no feeding, walks or litter; the 2021 specification called for four 1.5-volt C batteries.
  • Reported price: around $130 starting in Gizmodo’s November 2021 guide; check the current model and retailer price before buying.
  • Best fit: someone with allergies, restrictive housing, limited mobility or a preference for a simple, non-networked object.
  • Check first: whether meowing or purring will be soothing, and whether the recipient can replace batteries.

2. Tamagotchi virtual pet: best for a small daily ritual

A Tamagotchi puts feeding, cleaning and checking on a digital creature into a keychain-sized device. It suits someone who enjoys a predictable care loop or nostalgia and wants something that can be stored or paused more easily than a living animal.

  • Strength: inexpensive-looking, portable routine with no fur, mess or housing conflict.
  • Limitation: the screen supplies no tactile contact, and the exact features, battery type and price vary by current edition.
  • Buy for: an adult who wants a light responsibility, not someone seeking a lifelike animal presence.

3. Sony Aibo ERS-1000: best for a premium, interactive robot dog

Aibo is the technology-heavy choice. Gizmodo reported cameras, touch sensors, cloud memory and self-charging for the ERS-1000, along with a $2,900 price in 2021. A 2026 Journal of Business Research article used an approximate figure of US$3,000 for Aibo, illustrating how costly this category remains.

  • Ongoing needs: charging, a suitable wireless environment and attention to what data the connected service stores.
  • Before gifting: verify current regional sales, support, subscription or cloud requirements and return terms; the cited prices are not guaranteed 2026 offers.

4. Tombot Puppy: best for expressive, stationary companionship

Tombot Puppy uses head, mouth and tail movements to simulate a responsive puppy. Gizmodo reported involvement from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and a $500 reservation price, discounted to $450, in 2021. Those were reservation figures, not a promise of current retail stock or delivery.

Its stationary format may suit someone who wants visible movement and puppy-like reactions without walks. Confirm production status, availability in the recipient’s country, power or charging arrangements and the current price before making a purchase.

5. PARO therapeutic seal robot: consider for care settings

PARO is a therapy-oriented robotic seal named in a 2026 Journal of Business Research discussion of companion robots. That article listed an approximate price of US$6,000. It is a specialist purchase rather than a casual household gift, so a care home, therapist or family carer should assess fit, procurement and cleaning requirements.

Do not present PARO as a treatment or guaranteed loneliness cure. Confirm an authorized supplier, local support, training expectations and current pricing before committing institutional funds.

6. Another companion cat or dog robot: choose by senses and simplicity

The wider companion-robot category includes touch- and sound-responsive cats and dogs. The RSPCA says such robots may be viable for people who cannot own animals and may reduce isolation, while also stressing that circuits cannot replicate the special bond between a person and a living pet.

Compare whether a model reacts to touch, moves, speaks, requires an app or stores data. Ask the recipient about noise, charging, remote updates and whether a toy-like appearance feels comforting or patronizing. Availability varies substantially by model and country.

7. A digital-pet keychain other than Tamagotchi: best for pauseable micro-care

Other digital-pet keychains offer the same basic appeal: a tiny creature that needs occasional attention and can be carried or put away. They are useful when the recipient wants a care simulation with minimal space and no animal sounds in the room.

Features and reliability differ among current models. Check the exact device’s pause function, battery access, screen readability and whether its care cycle penalizes missed check-ins before buying.

Ruko 18011 Smart Robot Dog, Interactive Puppy Pet with 30 LED Expressions
  • Playful Puppy Companion: Meet the Ruko 18011 robot dog—a playful companion that walks, spins, wags its tail, dances, and even lifts its leg to “pee.” Just a gentle touch on its head, and it responds with cheerful sounds and silly moves, bringing endless giggles without the mess of a real pet.
  • LED Faces That Delight: With 70 glowing LED lights, this puppy shows more than 30 animated facial expressions. From wide happy eyes to goofy faces, kids can instantly see its moods, making storytelling, pretend play, and silly roleplay games more magical.
  • Learn Through Programming: Instead of just watching, kids become the “trainer.” With the programming mode, they can design up to 50 custom moves—like a dance routine or a parade of tricks. It’s a fun, hands-on way to spark creativity, problem-solving, and early STEM skills.
  • Control Near or Far: Whether kids are racing it across the living room or guiding it in the backyard, they’re always in charge. The 2.4GHz remote works from up to 98 feet away, while simple hand gestures let them direct their pup up close—so play never gets boring.
  • Safe Fun in Anywhere: This clever pup knows when something’s in the way. Thanks to obstacle-avoidance sensors, it smoothly avoids walls and furniture. Perfect for small apartments, bedrooms, or any indoor play space where kids can enjoy worry-free fun.

8. Responsive plush or stuffed animal: quiet, lower-cost physical comfort

A stuffed pet that mews, purrs or responds to touch gives the recipient something soft to hold without an internet connection. It is a practical option for someone who wants tactile reassurance but finds a mobile robot too complicated or a realistic animal simulation uncomfortable.

Look for washable surfaces, accessible battery compartments, an adjustable volume setting and a form that is easy to lift. A plush toy can be comforting, but it should be offered respectfully and with the adult’s consent.

9. Pet-themed collectible or model: for visual interest and hobby time

A realistic model, figurine, artwork or breed-focused collectible can provide a visible pet presence and a hobby without care tasks. This is best for someone who enjoys decorating, collecting or remembering a past animal, rather than someone asking for interaction.

Frame it honestly: a collectible may support interest and conversation, but there is no evidence here that it treats loneliness.

10. A plant-care gift: a different kind of nurturing routine

A hardy houseplant, herb kit or small indoor garden offers observation and manageable care. It can be a good alternative when the recipient wants something alive to tend but cannot keep an animal.

Ask about light, watering ability, pets already in the home and plant toxicity. A plant creates a nurturing ritual, not animal companionship, and should not be sold as an equivalent substitute.

11. Real contact through volunteering, fostering, pet-sitting or visits

When the missing ingredient is an actual animal or human connection, service-based options are more direct than a gadget. Local shelters may need scheduled volunteers; trusted friends may arrange pet-sitting or regular dog visits; fostering programs can sometimes match animals and homes by duration and support level.

  • Volunteering: ask about orientation, physical tasks, transport and minimum shift commitments.
  • Fostering: confirm who pays veterinary costs, what happens in an emergency and whether housing rules permit it.
  • Pet-sitting or visits: establish a reliable schedule, allergies, animal temperament and backup plans.

These options require coordination and are never guaranteed cures for loneliness, but they provide contact with living animals and other people that a robot cannot reproduce.

Questions to settle before you buy

  • Consent and dignity: ask whether the person actually wants a pet-like product; do not surprise an adult with a child-coded toy or a care obligation.
  • Home constraints: check landlord or housing rules, allergies, noise tolerance, trip hazards and available storage.
  • Physical access: consider grip strength, vision, hearing, mobility and the ability to open battery compartments or connect a charger.
  • Privacy: connected robots can use cameras, microphones, apps or cloud services. Explain what is collected and review account controls together.
  • Maintenance: clarify charging schedules, disposable batteries, cleaning and software support.
  • Emotional expectations: describe the item as companionship support, not a replacement for relationships or professional care.

What robot pets can—and cannot—do for loneliness

A robot can supply a repeatable presence, sensory feedback or a small reason to interact. That may be valuable for someone unable to keep a living animal. The RSPCA’s position is more limited: robot pets may reduce isolation, but the relationship with a living animal cannot be replicated by circuits and robotics.

If loneliness is persistent, distressing or accompanied by depression, cognitive decline or withdrawal, pair the gift with human support and appropriate medical or social-care help. The right choice is the one the recipient will willingly use and that fits their practical circumstances.
