A spider named Otacilia khezu was described as a new troglobitic species from Guangxi, China. Its name refers to Khezu, the blind flying wyvern from the Monster Hunter game franchise—but the documented connection is the name, not evidence that the spider shares the fictional monster’s traits.
What spider was named after a Monster Hunter monster?
The species is Otacilia khezu, a member of the spider family Phrurolithidae. The scientific paper describes it as a new troglobitic spider from Guangxi, China. “Troglobitic” is the paper’s classification; the published details cited here do not establish a particular cave, appearance, behavior, or special adaptation.
Why is it called Otacilia khezu?
The species epithet khezu refers to Khezu, a blind flying wyvern in the Monster Hunter franchise. In the paper’s naming note, khezu is treated as a noun in apposition. That explains the pop-culture reference, but it does not mean the real spider is blind or resembles the fictional creature.
Where and when was the spider described?
Lin, Yejie; Chen, Haifeng; Wang, Xihao; and Li, Shuqiang formally described Otacilia khezu in “Otacilia khezu sp. nov., a new troglobitic spider (Araneae, Phrurolithidae) from Guangxi, China.” The article appeared in Biodiversity Data Journal, volume 12, as article e126716 on June 13, 2024. The publication record and article are available from the journal’s DOI record.
