Scientists filmed a living giant squid about 100 miles southeast of New Orleans in 2019. A research trawl had already recovered another specimen off Louisiana in 2009, while the first known Gulf specimen was found off the Mississippi Delta in 1954. These records show that giant squid occur in deep Gulf waters—not that several U.S. coastlines are routine sighting hotspots.
Where have giant squid been documented in U.S. waters?
The strongest U.S. evidence is concentrated in the northern Gulf of Mexico, especially off Louisiana and near the Mississippi Delta. The records are separated by decades and represent different kinds of evidence: a living animal observed in its habitat, and dead or captured specimens that could be measured.
| Year and place | What scientists documented | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 2019, about 100 miles southeast of New Orleans | A NOAA-funded team filmed a living giant squid with the Medusa deep-sea camera system. | A living giant squid was present at that Gulf location; NOAA described it as the first filming of a living giant squid in its natural habitat in American waters. |
| 2009, off Louisiana, deeper than 1,500 feet | A research trawl caught a specimen just over 19½ feet long and weighing more than 103 pounds. | A physical specimen was available for examination. NOAA called it the first giant squid captured during scientific research in the Gulf and the second known giant squid obtained from the Gulf. |
| 1954, off the Mississippi Delta | A giant squid was found floating dead at the surface. | It was the first known giant squid specimen from the Gulf of Mexico identified in the NOAA account. |
The 2019 living observation
In an account published by NOAA Ocean Exploration on June 20, 2019, biologist Edie Widder described the encounter while researchers reviewed video from the Medusa system. The team found the animal after five deployments. The two people most familiar with squid were initially “70 percent sure” it was a juvenile giant squid; after further review, giant-squid expert Michael Vecchione was nearly certain.
Widder wrote, “We also found it here, only about 100 miles southeast of New Orleans.” She also emphasized the difference between an unusual animal and a movie monster: “Most importantly, we did not find a monster.” The stealthy camera may have helped because earlier remotely operated vehicle and submersible dives had not located one, but that observation is a possible explanation for the discovery—not a population estimate.

What the 2009 specimen added
NOAA Fisheries Service reported on September 21, 2009, that scientists caught the Louisiana specimen in a research trawl at more than 1,500 feet. Unlike video, a specimen permits direct physical examination and measurement. Vecchione called it “an incredibly rare find in the Gulf of Mexico.”
Does this mean giant squid live off every U.S. coast?
No. Smithsonian Ocean says giant squid are thought to occur worldwide based largely on strandings. It describes frequent appearances on both the eastern and western sides of the Northern Atlantic and a likely preference for continental and island slopes. That broad distribution does not establish a recurring, confirmed sighting site for every U.S. Atlantic or Pacific state.

The responsible conclusion is narrower: giant squid have been documented in the Gulf of Mexico, and the species has a broad oceanic distribution. The available records do not provide a modern coast-by-coast abundance ranking or a probability that a swimmer, boater or diver will see one.
How deep do giant squid live?
Smithsonian Ocean places the reported habitat range at roughly 1,650 to 3,300 feet (500 to 1,000 meters). The Louisiana research specimen came from deeper than 1,500 feet, consistent with a deep-water animal. Surface appearances can still occur when carcasses float up or when rare observations happen outside the usual depth range; a deep habitat should not be read as an absolute surface barrier.

- High quality. Detailed realistic design.
How big is a giant squid?
Size figures depend on what is measured. Smithsonian Ocean lists a longest recorded total length of 43 feet (13 meters), including the tentacles, and a reported maximum mantle length of 7.4 feet (2.25 meters).
| Measurement | Reported figure | Why the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total length | 43 feet (13 meters), including tentacles | Arms and tentacles can be lost, stretched or measured in different positions. A dead squid can also be bloated, making comparisons less consistent. |
| Mantle length | 7.4 feet (2.25 meters) | The mantle is the main body and is generally a more stable comparison than tentacle-to-tip length. |
That is why a headline number should always identify its measurement method. “43 feet” is not the length of a rigid, snake-like body; it includes flexible feeding structures whose condition changes from one observation to another.

What does a giant squid look like?
Smithsonian describes two eyes, a beak, eight arms, two feeding tentacles and a funnel, also called a siphon. The long tentacles seize prey and bring it toward the beak. This anatomy is specialized for life in the deep ocean, not for attacking vessels.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Kraken a real animal?
The Kraken is a legendary sea monster. The giant squid is a real cephalopod whose rarity, size and occasional strandings helped inspire sea-monster traditions. Smithsonian says a giant squid attacking a boat is not known to happen in real life. Kraken imagery is therefore cultural framing, not evidence that the animal poses a routine danger to coastal visitors.

What the U.S. records can—and cannot—tell us
- They can show presence: the 2019 video places a living giant squid in the Gulf southeast of New Orleans, while the 2009 and 1954 records document physical specimens.
- They can show rarity of observation: the NOAA accounts describe these encounters as unusual, and the 2019 team needed specialized deep-sea equipment.
- They cannot measure population size: three notable Gulf records over many decades are not a survey and cannot produce a reliable abundance estimate.
- They cannot confirm every coastline: worldwide or Northern Atlantic distribution statements do not equal documented recurring sites along each U.S. coast.
Bottom line for readers looking for the “Kraken coast”
If “where are giant squid found in the United States?” is the question, the best-supported answer is the deep Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana, including waters southeast of New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta area. A giant squid is real and can reach extraordinary lengths, but the evidence describes a rarely observed deep-sea animal—not a monster regularly approaching beaches, boats or divers.
