Dolly, a female southern white rhinoceros at Zoo Knoxville, was humanely euthanized on February 6, 2025, at age 56. Her mobility had deteriorated sharply in her final days, and Zoo Knoxville veterinarians and specialists from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine concluded that no remaining treatment could preserve her quality of life.
What happened to Dolly the rhino?
Zoo Knoxville announced Dolly’s death after a veterinary quality-of-life assessment. She had been receiving medical support for age-related conditions, but her ability to move declined significantly. The veterinary team determined that continued treatment would not provide an acceptable quality of life, so euthanasia was chosen to prevent further suffering.
Zoo Knoxville president and CEO Bill Street said, “She was a remarkable animal, and her impact on this zoo and the people who have met her is immeasurable.” He said staff focused on her comfort and dignity and found comfort in knowing she was surrounded by people who knew her best.
How old was Dolly, and why was her age unusual?
Dolly lived to 56, making her an exceptionally long-lived southern white rhinoceros. Zoo Knoxville and contemporaneous reports identified her as the oldest rhinoceros in the United States when she died. That description is tied to the time of her death; it is not a permanent ranking as other rhinos age.

| Years at Zoo Knoxville | From 1976 until her death in 2025 |
The reported 36.5-year figure is a median, not a maximum. Dolly lived 19.5 years beyond that median, an unusually long lifespan even for a species capable of living for decades under professional care.
Where was Dolly born and where did she live?
Dolly was born in 1968 at Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park in South Africa. She arrived at Zoo Knoxville in 1976 and spent the rest of her life there. She was among the zoo’s first white rhinoceroses and became a familiar presence to generations of visitors.

How many calves did Dolly have?
Dolly raised 10 calves during her lifetime. Zoo Knoxville described her as fiercely protective when she was raising them. In retirement, staff said her temperament softened: she spent her days grazing and napping in sand.
Her reproductive history was part of her lasting contribution to the zoo, but her significance extended beyond the number of calves she raised. Her daily care, longevity and visibility gave visitors a sustained opportunity to learn about rhinoceroses.

Why was euthanasia considered the humane choice?
A decision based on quality of life
Humane euthanasia is used in zoological medicine when pain, disability or declining function can no longer be managed well enough to maintain an animal’s welfare. In Dolly’s case, the decision followed consultation between Zoo Knoxville’s veterinary staff and University of Tennessee veterinary specialists. The stated reason was not simply her age; it was the serious mobility decline and the conclusion that no adequate treatment remained.
Comfort and dignity at the end
Zoo Knoxville said Dolly’s comfort and dignity were the priority. The decision allowed staff to avoid extending a period in which her mobility and welfare were continuing to deteriorate despite support.

Dolly’s place in southern white rhino conservation
Dolly’s death also drew attention to the threats facing her species. In conservation context reported by The Associated Press from Zoo Knoxville in 2025, the world’s rhino population was described as having fallen from about 500,000 at the start of the 20th century to about 27,000 at the time of that report, including roughly 17,000 southern white rhinos. Zoo Knoxville said approximately 10,000 rhinos had been illegally killed for their horns during the preceding decade.
Those figures are historical context from the 2025 report, not a current population census. Dolly’s long life and 10 calves were meaningful, but one animal’s lifespan or reproductive record cannot by itself measure conservation success. Zoos also contribute through managed breeding, veterinary knowledge, public education and support for field conservation.

How people are remembering Dolly
For Zoo Knoxville and its community, Dolly was more than an exhibit animal. She was a long-term ambassador for southern white rhinos and a recognizable individual with a strong relationship to her keepers and visitors. Calling her “beloved” reflects that memorial connection rather than a measurable international ranking.
Her story leaves visitors with a clear record: a rhinoceros born in South Africa in 1968, brought to Knoxville in 1976, mother to 10 calves, and cared for through an exceptionally long life until a humane veterinary decision ended her suffering at 56.
