Researchers recorded multiple living roughskin dogfish (Centroscymnus owstonii) at 1,054 metres off Little Cayman in the Cayman Islands. The peer-reviewed report describes this as the first record of the species for the Greater Antilles and a new locality record for the Cayman Islands—not the first footage or discovery of the shark worldwide.
What the Cayman Islands footage shows
The video captures multiple roughskin dogfish, identified as Centroscymnus owstonii, alive at 1,054 m in the western Atlantic waters off Little Cayman. The observation was made with a deep-sea remote lander video system, allowing researchers to document sharks in their natural environment rather than from a fishing capture. The study is reported in Journal of Fish Biology and is available from Wiley.
What “first record” means
The wording matters because geographic records are narrower than worldwide discovery claims.

How deep was the shark filmed?
The sharks were recorded at 1,054 m. That is the depth of this observation, not a measurement of the species’ complete depth range or proof that the animals occupy every depth above or below it.
Why remote video is useful for deep-sea sharks
It records animals alive
Much of what is known about roughskin dogfish and other deep-sea sharks comes from incidental captures. A lander camera can show a living animal at depth and preserve an occurrence record without relying on a specimen brought to the surface.

It fills geographic gaps
The study describes the species’ global distribution as patchy. A confirmed observation off Little Cayman therefore adds regional information even though it does not estimate abundance, population size or conservation status.
It expands deep-sea survey options
The authors note that video landers can help improve understanding of deep-sea shark biology and diversity. Their value is especially clear where conventional sampling is difficult, expensive or likely to miss animals that are not caught incidentally.

This is a precise regional distribution update: a deep-sea shark documented alive in a part of the Caribbean where the species had not previously been recorded in the published record.
