The smallest egg in a 2024 study of dinosaur fossils from Ganzhou, China, measures 29 mm long. Published online on 14 October 2024, the study names the egg type Minioolithus ganzhouensis and identifies it as the smallest known non-avian theropod egg. The fossil evidence does not reveal the exact dinosaur that laid it.
What is the world’s smallest dinosaur egg?
The 29 mm-long specimen is the smallest dinosaur egg fossil reported globally by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in October 2024. The peer-reviewed study describes six complete eggs from a partial clutch and calls them the smallest known non-avian theropod eggs. “Non-avian” distinguishes extinct theropod dinosaurs from birds, which are living theropods.
The fossils are more than 80 million years old, placing them in the Late Cretaceous. The 29 mm figure is the egg’s length, not its width or height; the study summary does not provide matching dimensions for the smallest specimen.
Where were the eggs found?
The partial clutch was found in 2021 at a construction site in Meilin Township, Ganxian District, Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, in eastern China. The find adds to the already rich record of dinosaur eggs in the Ganzhou Basin.

What is Minioolithus ganzhouensis?
Minioolithus ganzhouensis is an ootaxon: a classification for fossil eggs based on their features. It is not the name of a dinosaur identified from bones. Researchers established the new ootaxon from the eggs’ external form and eggshell microstructure, placing it in the egg family Ovaloolithidae.
Features that distinguish the eggs
- Arrangement: The eggs occur in an irregular arrangement.
- Surface ornamentation: Their shells show worm-like and nodular patterns.
- Shell structure: The boundary between the two structural shell layers is gradual.
Together, these characteristics support the study’s classification and theropod affinity. They do not identify a particular parent species.

How does the 29 mm egg compare with an earlier small-egg benchmark?
CAS cited an earlier Chinese small-egg benchmark measuring approximately 45.5 × 40.4 × 34.4 mm. That egg is larger in each reported dimension than the 29 mm length of the smallest Minioolithus specimen, though the measurements describe different dimensions and should not be treated as a like-for-like length comparison.
The two finds also differ in how much information is reported here: the newer study describes six complete eggs and shell traits, while the earlier benchmark is cited for its dimensions. The available figures do not establish a direct comparison of their ages, nest contexts, or parent dinosaurs.

Which dinosaur laid the eggs?
The exact parent dinosaur is unknown. The study supports a non-avian theropod affinity from the egg morphology and shell microstructure, but no identified body fossil is tied to the clutch. An egg classification cannot, by itself, name the animal that laid it.
CAS reported that planned micro-CT work could help reconstruct how the eggs were buried and investigate their formation, possible parent type, and reproductive methods. That work was described as a future research plan, not a completed identification.

Why does this discovery matter?
The find adds a distinct, exceptionally small egg type to the Late Cretaceous fossil record of the Ganzhou Basin. It shows that non-avian theropods produced eggs at least as small as this 29 mm specimen, broadening the known range of their reproductive diversity.
Its detailed shell structure and irregular arrangement also give researchers another case to compare with other fossil eggs. Such comparisons can help investigate variation in egg formation and nesting among theropods; this single clutch does not establish how common such small eggs were or why they evolved.
