Verdict: LG’s Rolling Bot was a genuine spherical home-monitoring prototype shown in February 2016, not a verified retail product. Contemporary reports described Wi‑Fi control, an 8-megapixel camera, microphones, two-way interaction, an infrared blaster and a laser-based pet mode. No reliable evidence establishes a consumer launch, price or current availability.
What the LG Rolling Bot was
LG showed the Rolling Bot during the LG G5 launch period as part of its connected “Friends” accessory strategy. It was a compact rolling ball, described by contemporary coverage as slightly larger than a softball, designed to move around a home under smartphone control. Droid Life’s February 21, 2016 report described the unit as a rough prototype whose release timing had not been announced.
This was a mobile companion and monitoring device, not a robotic vacuum. Its BB‑8-like shape was a visual comparison, not a claim that it shared BB‑8’s capabilities; TechCrunch used the analogy when describing the concept.

If charging fails, try a different USB cable or charging adapter.
- 【Angle adjustable】By freely adjusting the angle of the laser head, you can make the toy shoot random laser dots on the ground or walls to satisfy your pet's preferences and make their playtime more exciting. The laser head can be manually adjusted within a 50° angle range vertically and automatically oscillates within a 60° angle range horizontally. For indoor use only. Avoid direct sunlight on the sensor area to prevent interference.Adjust the laser head direction before use to ensure proper angle alignment. If the laser dot doesn’t move, check the mode settings or battery level.
That does not establish modern security-camera features. The reporting does not confirm image quality, night vision, recording retention, cloud storage, encryption, security alerts or a production app. It also does not say whether remote driving worked outside the home or only on the local network.
Talk through microphones
Reports said the Rolling Bot included microphones and supported remote interaction with people or pets. In practical terms, that suggests listening and speaking through the robot, but no verified specifications were provided for speaker volume, audio range, echo cancellation or recording.
Control infrared appliances
An onboard IR blaster was reported as a way to control compatible appliances such as televisions. Droid Life and the contemporary Techmeme summary mentioned the feature.

- USB Rechargeable: The kitten toy free your mind from changing battery, simply charges it via the type-C cable (power adaptor not included), fully charged in 2.5 hours, and lasts for approximately 5 days of use. If battery is low, indicator light flashes three times to remind us.
IR control is not the same as universal smart-home integration: it normally requires a compatible device code and a line of sight between the transmitter and appliance. No supported-brand list was established, and there is no evidence that the prototype controlled cloud-connected locks, alarms or thermostats.
Why the headline said “cat torturing”
The phrase was provocative headline humor, not a report of physical abuse. The pet mode reportedly used the robot’s movement and a laser pointer to attract or tease cats and dogs; TIME and TechCrunch also covered the laser-based idea.
A laser should never be aimed into an animal’s eyes. Some pets may become anxious, frustrated or fixated when they can chase light but never catch anything. Supervise use, stop if the animal shows distress, and provide physical toys, treats or human play as well. Those are practical animal-welfare considerations, not documented LG instructions for this prototype.

Was the Rolling Bot ever released?
The strongest evidence says it remained a demonstration prototype. Droid Life called the shown unit rough and said LG had not disclosed when it would be available. The reviewed coverage contains no confirmed retail price, consumer release date, final specification sheet, support documentation or currently supported app.
Accordingly, the defensible present-day description is unreleased, or at minimum not verifiably launched as an ordinary consumer product. Do not treat marketplace listings using old photographs as proof of an authentic, supported LG product. A legitimate purchase would require evidence of working software, compatible charging hardware and a meaningful return policy.

The appeal was easy to imagine: check on a pet, investigate a noise, speak through the robot, move the camera into another room or point an IR transmitter at a television. Its usefulness, however, depended on a whole chain of conditions:

- 7 in 1 Modes: Scroll the gear to pick 5 red patterns(dots, smiles, mouse, stars, butterflies). The variety of patterns sparks pet's interest, enhancing your and cats' interaction. 3 lighting modes can be adjusted, red for cat playing, purple for checking cat skin health /money, white for mini flashlight
- USB Direct Charging: No dry batteries needed! Unplug the back cover and plug into USB port (adapter/computer/car) to charge, about 20mins fully charged.
- Portable Design: With metal clip and anti-lost rope, compact size(4.25in long) make cat toy easily put into pockets. Play with your cat at any moment for indoor.
- Interactive Cat Toy: Interactive play not only helps cats release energy through chasing, but also exercise the pet's body and agility.
- Ideal Gift: Stainless steel casing, 5 patterns, keep lonely cats happy and bond through daily play! It's the best gift for pets and feline friends.
- The robot had to remain charged and reachable on Wi‑Fi.
- The smartphone app and any required LG account or backend had to work.
- The floor had to be navigable for a rolling ball.
- An IR appliance had to be compatible and positioned where the robot could reach it by line of sight.
The reports do not establish whether it could cross thresholds, rugs or clutter; recover from collisions; climb or approach stairs safely; return to a charging dock; avoid obstacles autonomously; or recover from a lost connection. Other unresolved questions include what happened when the battery ran low, the robot became trapped under furniture, the camera feed froze or a pet knocked it out of reach.

A movable camera raises more privacy issues than a fixed one because it could be driven into bedrooms, bathrooms or other private spaces. No final documentation in the available reporting answers where video or audio went, whether footage was stored locally or in the cloud, how remote access was encrypted, whether household members could share access, whether a camera-activity indicator was present, or what happened to user data if the product was never commercialized.
Those unknowns are important reasons to avoid describing the Rolling Bot as a complete security system. The evidence supports a mobile camera-and-intercom concept, not professional monitoring, alarm integration, reliable autonomous patrols or forensic video retention.

How LG’s later home robots differed
2024 smart-home AI agent
LG’s 2024 concept used a two-legged-wheel design rather than a ball. LG described voice and image recognition, connected-home control, environmental sensing for temperature, humidity and indoor air quality, autonomous movement between rooms, and pet-monitoring and patrol functions. LG’s announcement presents it as a separate smart-home agent, not as the Rolling Bot becoming a product.
2026 CLOiD
LG’s CLOiD was more ambitious and physically different: a wheeled base with a head-mounted camera, display, speaker and sensors, plus two articulated arms. LG specified seven degrees of freedom per arm and five independently actuated fingers per hand, and demonstrated tasks including retrieving food, using an oven, running laundry and folding clothes through the ThinQ ecosystem. See LG’s CLOiD announcement. LG’s CES 2026 preview and CES demonstrations likewise describe later robotics work, not a retail Rolling Bot.
Bottom line
The Rolling Bot was a memorable 2016 LG prototype that combined a remotely driven camera, two-way audio, pet-oriented laser play and limited IR appliance control. “Cat torturing” described a joke about teasing pets with a laser, not literal harm. Because no verified consumer launch, price or current support has been established, it should be treated as a historical demonstration—not a current LG product you can reliably buy.
