A dive team working in Fiordland’s deep channels in southern New Zealand has reported finding an unusually large black coral. The coral stood more than four metres high, its branches spread nearly five metres, and its age was estimated in centuries—not precisely measured at 300 years.

What was found?

The organism is a black coral, a member of the order Antipatharia. The account does not identify this individual coral to species, so its exact scientific name remains unknown.

The observation was made by a dive team led by researchers from Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington. Professor James Bell, a marine biologist quoted in a January 18, 2026 secondary report, said most black corals encountered while diving are small. He added that larger examples are usually less than two to three metres tall, making this specimen unusually large.

Where was the coral seen?

The coral was observed in Fiordland’s deep channels, in the South Island’s far southwest. The published account gives no exact coordinates, and it does not identify a specific channel or dive site. Fiordland’s steep, sheltered waterways contain deep marine habitats that are difficult to survey routinely.

How large and how old is it?

Measurement What the report says How to interpret it
Height More than four metres A reported measurement for this individual coral
Branch span Nearly five metres The reported width across its branches
Age Estimated to be centuries old An imprecise estimate; no exact age or dating method was provided

The “300-year-old” wording used in some headlines should therefore be treated as shorthand, not a confirmed date. The accessible report does not establish that the coral is exactly 300 years old.

Is it New Zealand’s largest black coral?

The report describes the specimen as likely the largest documented in New Zealand territorial waters. That is a qualified description, not an independently verified national record. It refers to documented observations rather than a complete census of every black coral in the country’s waters.

Richard Kinsey, a senior biodiversity ranger with New Zealand’s Department of Conservation, said that after nearly 20 years as a marine ranger in Fiordland, it was rare to see a coral so large and “easily the largest one I can remember seeing.” His observation reflects field experience, not a formal measurement of all known colonies.

Why black corals matter

Black corals are colonial animals that build branching skeletons and can create three-dimensional habitat in the deep sea. Their structure offers surfaces and shelter for other organisms. Large colonies may take many years to develop, which makes physical damage especially consequential even when a colony can survive for a long time.

The report says the Fiordland project is conducting targeted surveys to map ecologically significant areas and reduce risks from marine activity. The work involves university researchers, the Department of Conservation and the Fiordland Marine Guardians, with the results intended to inform guidance for vessel operators and fishers.

What could damage a colony?

Anchors, fishing gear and other contact with the seabed can break or abrade branching corals. The report discusses black corals as protected under New Zealand’s Wildlife Act 1953, but detailed legal wording and how it applies to this individual colony should be checked against current official guidance before drawing legal conclusions.

Because the coral’s precise location has not been published, recreational divers and boat operators should not attempt to locate or approach it. Avoid anchoring on reef or hard seabed habitat, follow local Fiordland rules and report observations through the appropriate conservation channels rather than touching or collecting coral.

What scientists still do not know

  • The specimen’s species-level identification has not been reported.
  • No exact age determination or method has been published in the accessible account.
  • The coral’s coordinates and the survey conditions have not been disclosed.
  • There is no independently verified population statistic showing how many similarly large black corals occur in New Zealand waters.

How to report another very large black coral

Professor Bell’s team is asking people who know of particularly large black corals to share reports. A useful sighting record should include the date, approximate location, depth, estimated height or span, photographs or video when available, and whether the observation was made while diving or from a remotely operated vehicle. Do not break, handle or collect the colony, and avoid dropping an anchor at the site.

The bottom line

New Zealand researchers have reported an exceptional black coral in Fiordland: over four metres tall, nearly five metres across and estimated to be centuries old. It may be the largest documented in New Zealand territorial waters, but the evidence currently supports a carefully qualified report—not an exact 300-year age or a conclusively established national record.
