But no artificial-intelligence system translated her sounds or carried on a conversation with her. The 2021 encounter was a live playback experiment; researchers analyzed the whale’s responses afterward.
What happened during the whale encounter?
On August 19, 2021, researchers aboard the vessel Glacier Seal were working in Frederick Sound in Southeast Alaska, about 60 miles south of Juneau. They broadcast a recorded humpback contact call—known as a “whup” or “whup/throp”—through an underwater speaker. An adult female humpback identified as Twain approached the boat and stayed nearby as the team played calls and recorded her sounds with hydrophones. The exchange lasted approximately 20 minutes, according to the 2023 PeerJ study.
Twain’s identity was established using fluke photographs and acoustic comparisons. Her age has been estimated at about 38–41 years, not known precisely. A Scientific American account reported that she made 36 calls during the interaction.
The researchers varied the intervals between broadcasts and observed that Twain’s response timing appeared to change in relation to those intervals. The team described three broad phases in the encounter: engagement, agitation, and disengagement. Those labels are researchers’ interpretations of the observed behavior, not direct access to the whale’s mental state. A UC Davis account describes the field encounter and its setting.

Why call it a conversation—and what does that mean?
“Conversation” is a useful shorthand for an exchange in which one party’s signals appear to affect the other’s responses. Here, the whale’s calls and their timing were related to the playback, making the encounter more informative than simply recording a whale vocalizing nearby. The study’s authors interpreted the timing and behavior as evidence of an intentional acoustic and behavioral interaction.
That interpretation is not the same as demonstrating that Twain understood a message, shared meanings with the researchers, or used human-like language. The experiment replayed a single type of recorded contact call; it was not a free-form dialogue, and the researchers did not know what Twain’s calls meant.

- Observed: researchers broadcast recorded calls, Twain approached and vocalized, and her response timing appeared to relate to changes in the broadcast intervals.
- Supported as an interpretation: the timing and behavior are consistent with responsive interaction and turn-taking.
- Not demonstrated: a whale vocabulary, grammar, human-like syntax, shared semantic content, or translation into English.
Did AI enable the exchange?
No. The Twain encounter used recorded calls, an underwater speaker, and hydrophones. The published study presents it as an interactive bioacoustic playback experiment, with acoustic, behavioral, and statistical analysis—not as an AI-mediated conversation. The analyses were conducted after the encounter.
AI and machine learning may help with the broader challenge of studying whale communication. Researchers can use computational methods to search large sound collections for recurring patterns, group similar calls, and compare vocalizations with behavior and context. Such tools could also inform future adaptive experiments. But the UC Davis discussion of the Whale-SETI work describes AI and information-theoretic methods as research directions, not technology that translated Twain’s calls in 2021.

What does the study establish—and what remains uncertain?
The PeerJ paper supports the conclusion that a humpback responded during a structured playback interaction and that the timing of her calls changed in relation to the broadcast timing. That is evidence worth investigating: it suggests researchers can test how whales respond to carefully controlled acoustic signals. It does not identify the meaning of Twain’s calls or establish a general rule about humpback communication.
The encounter was opportunistic and involved one identified whale. Researchers controlled only part of the exchange, and the recorded call was not a deliberately constructed sentence or message. Twain may have been responding to the contact call, the boat, another environmental cue, or several factors together. A whale matching timing or call structure can indicate responsiveness without proving shared meaning. Because the behavioral phases and patterns were interpreted after the event, they are suggestive rather than a predictive test replicated across many animals.

For those reasons, claims that the study demonstrated whale grammar or syntax go beyond what the paper reports. The researchers’ strongest defensible result concerns acoustic interaction and response timing, not a decoded language.

The team and institutional coverage have described the encounter cautiously as a potentially first documented interaction of this type. Whether it counts as the “first conversation” depends on what the term means: a call-and-response, a two-way acoustic exchange, an intentional interaction, or a semantic conversation. The evidence supports describing a human-initiated playback exchange with a humpback, but it does not settle the broader historical claim that no such interaction happened before.

Why does Whale-SETI study whale communication?
The Whale-SETI project uses communication research on Earth to develop ways of recognizing structure and interaction in signals without assuming they resemble human speech. If scientists can learn to detect meaningful patterns in an unfamiliar animal communication system, some of those methods could eventually inform the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. That is a methodological analogy and research objective—not evidence that whales communicate like extraterrestrials.
Project CETI is a separate initiative, not another name for the team behind Twain’s encounter. It focuses primarily on sperm whales and describes a workflow involving audio, video, and behavioral data, machine-learning pattern analysis, and playback validation. Its approach is outlined on Project CETI’s research page.
What would make a stronger test?
A more decisive case for communication would require repeatable results that distinguish a response to a signal from curiosity, attraction to a vessel, or other explanations. Useful safeguards and tests would include:
- Repeated trials with many whales, call types, and contexts, rather than relying on a single encounter.
- Hypotheses and predicted responses defined before analysis, so a proposed pattern can be tested rather than only noticed afterward.
- Behavioral scoring that is blinded or automated where possible, with independent replication.
- Predictive experiments in which a model-selected signal produces a consistent, measurable response.
- Evidence linking signals to stable behavioral or environmental contexts before proposing specific meanings.
- Animal-welfare protocols that limit disruption and define when playback must stop.
Playback experiments also raise ethical questions: repeated calls could alter natural behavior, and an apparent “greeting” or “agitation” may reflect human interpretation rather than a known mental state. Researchers need to account for sensitive contexts such as feeding, breeding, migration, and social activity, and to weigh the scientific value of an experiment against possible disturbance. The Scientific American report characterizes this work as preliminary and notes the limits on modifying the signal during the encounter.

Twain’s 20-minute exchange was a rare and scientifically interesting call-and-response interaction. It offers evidence to investigate turn-taking and acoustic responsiveness, but it was not an AI translation breakthrough: no one decoded the whale’s calls, and the experiment did not establish that researchers and Twain shared a language.
