On April 22, 2024, macaques in Lopburi, Thailand, damaged more than 30 protest signs aimed at the monkeys and appealing to the country’s Department of National Parks. Reports document the animals biting, chewing, pulling, and tearing the posters; they do not establish that the macaques understood the signs or acted out of political anger.
What happened in Lopburi?
Thairath reported on April 23, 2024, that the incident took place around 6 p.m. the previous day near Lopburi’s market, including Prang Khaek Road, Prang Sam Yot Road, and Ratchadamnoen Road. As macaques gathered on shop awnings to rest, they bit, chewed, pulled, and tore protest posters. Some signs featured the face of a parks department director. Why did the monkeys tear down the posters?
The reports establish what the macaques did, not why they did it. They do not show that the animals recognized the posters as criticism, understood the appeal to government officials, or intentionally opposed the message. Calling the episode “fighting back” is a colorful framing, not evidence of political intent.

The observed actions—biting, chewing, pulling, and tearing—are the limit of what these accounts support. Without evidence about the animals’ motives, it would be misleading to describe the damage as a deliberate response to the protest.
What the incident does—and does not—tell us
The episode illustrates a direct clash between macaques and people in a market area: residents and shopkeepers posted signs seeking official action, and monkeys damaged those signs. It does not, by itself, establish the current size of Lopburi’s macaque population, the present government response, or why the population may have changed. The two reports do not provide evidence for those broader claims.
