The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program says insect repellent applied to skin or clothing will not deter stinging insects. To reduce encounters, avoid fragrances, cover exposed skin, stay away from suspected nests, and respond calmly if a bee approaches.
Do bee repellents for people work?
Not according to the guidance cited here. UC IPM states, “Insect repellent applied to your skin or clothing won’t deter these stinging insects.” That means mosquito-repellent claims should not be treated as evidence that a product will keep bees away. CDC guidance about repellents such as DEET and picaridin addresses mosquitoes and other biting arthropods, not bee deterrence. The sources also do not establish citronella, peppermint, other essential oils, or a marketed human spray as reliable bee repellents.
So, if you are looking for the best bee repellent to apply to your skin, the evidence does not support recommending one. The practical options below reduce exposure or help you respond safely; they do not repel bees.
What helps reduce the chance of a bee encounter?
Skip fragrances before going into an active area
Leave perfume, cologne, and scented soap off when you expect to be near bees or wasps. CDC/NIOSH also advises avoiding perfumed toiletries and banana-scented toiletries. This is a precaution, not a guarantee that insects will stay away.

Cover skin with suitable clothing
For outdoor work or other exposure, wear light-colored, smooth-finished clothing that covers as much skin as possible. UC IPM also advises avoiding bright or patterned clothing and recommends long pants and a long-sleeved shirt where disturbing a nest is likely. Clothing protects by limiting exposed skin; it does not act as a repellent.
Watch where you walk and work
When possible, avoid flowering plants, and do not walk barefoot through vegetation. Pay attention to repeated flight paths: insects flying to and from one particular spot may indicate a nest. Keep work areas clean and discard food rather than leaving it outdoors, since discarded food can attract some stinging insects.

What should you do if a bee comes close?
If one insect is flying nearby
Stay calm and still rather than swatting. CDC/NIOSH warns, “Swatting at an insect may cause it to sting.” A nearby bee may simply be passing through or investigating. If it lands to inspect a smell or obtain water, UC IPM says it may leave on its own; if needed, slowly brush it away with paper.
If several stinging insects attack
Run to an indoor space or other shelter. Do not jump into water: some stinging insects may hover above it. If a suspected nest is nearby, leave the area and do not approach or disturb it. A veil or head net is face protection during retreat, not a reason to get closer to a nest.

When does a sting need urgent medical attention?
People with a history of severe reactions should carry their prescribed epinephrine and medical identification, following their clinician’s instructions. Seek immediate care for severe symptoms or a sting to the neck or mouth. UC IPM’s 2011 publication estimated that one to two people out of 1,000 are allergic or hypersensitive to bee or wasp stings; that is a dated estimate, not a current prevalence figure.
