No good evidence shows that two pit bulls could reliably take down a healthy adult male lion. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo reports that male lions weigh 330–550 pounds (150–250 kilograms) and have powerful forelegs, teeth and jaws adapted to pull down and kill prey. The outcome of a hypothetical encounter cannot be known from those facts alone, but saying the dogs could win as a dependable result goes beyond the evidence.
How do the animals compare?
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo lists adult male lions at 330–550 pounds (150–250 kilograms). That is a species-profile range, not the weight of a particular lion. The zoo also says lions primarily eat large animals weighing 100–1,000 pounds (45–453 kilograms).
Body weight does not determine the outcome of a fight by itself. Still, the lion’s size matters alongside its hunting adaptations: the zoo describes lions as having strong, compact bodies and powerful forelegs, teeth and jaws for pulling down and killing prey. Smithsonian’s National Zoo: Lion
Does cooperative hunting mean two dogs could win?
Lions sometimes hunt cooperatively, and their tactics vary with the prey. That behavior does not establish how two domestic dogs would act in a fight with a lion, or predict who would prevail. The Smithsonian’s discussion of lion hunting is about lion behavior, not this specific matchup. Smithsonian’s National Zoo: Do Lions Actually Purr? And Other Questions, Answered (January 19, 2024).

What can be concluded about the hypothetical fight?
No source cited here documents a fight between a lion and two pit bulls or provides a reliable test of the outcome. Individual animals and circumstances would matter, so a categorical prediction would be speculation. The available evidence supports neither a guaranteed result nor a claim that two pit bulls could reliably defeat a healthy adult male lion.
