No. Studies have found genetic differences among dogs sampled near the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, but they do not show that the dogs are evolving faster than any other species. A study that tested whether an increased mutation rate explained differences between two dog populations found no evidence that it did.
What the studies found about Chernobyl-area dogs
Genetic differences between sampled populations
A 2023 study by Spatola and colleagues analyzed 302 free-roaming dogs sampled at the power plant and 15–45 km away. The researchers found that genome-wide genetic profiles distinguished dogs from the power plant and Chernobyl City. The power-plant group also showed greater genetic similarity within the group and differentiation from the other sampled dogs. Family relationships across sampling sites were consistent with migration. These findings describe population structure; they do not establish that radiation caused it. Science Advances study.
Selection-scan signals are candidates, not proven adaptations
A separate 2023 analysis by Dillon and colleagues reported 391 outlier loci associated with genomic regions that may have been influenced by directional selection, and identified 52 candidate genes. These are results from a selection scan, not proof that radiation caused adaptations in the dogs. The authors presented possible responses to exposure over generations as a subject for further study. Did increased mutation cause the genetic differences?
A mutation-focused follow-up tested whether an increased mutation rate could explain differentiation between two Chornobyl dog populations. Its authors concluded: “Thus, we find no evidence that an increased mutation rate is driving the genetic differentiation between these two Chornobyl populations.” Mutation-focused study abstract.

That conclusion addresses the explanation tested in that study. It does not settle every possible biological or environmental factor that might contribute to population differences. Nor does genetic differentiation by itself measure how quickly mutations arise.
Why exposure measurements are not mutation evidence
A separate two-year survey measured internal cesium-137 and external beta-emitter contamination in dogs near the power plant. Those measurements document contaminant exposure. They are not measurements of mutation rate and do not, by themselves, show that exposure caused genetic differences. Exposure survey record.

To establish a fastest-evolving-species claim, researchers would need a defined measure of evolutionary rate and comparable evidence across species. The studies cited here do not provide that ranking. They examine distinct questions—population structure, candidate signals in a selection scan, mutation-rate evidence, and contaminant exposure—and those measures cannot be collapsed into a claim about “DNA mutation” or evolutionary speed.
