An Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) was photographed in far-western Nepal in November 2024, the first photographic evidence of the species there since 1839, according to a report published in January 2025. The sighting confirms the otter’s presence in Nepal; it does not establish how many live there or whether the population is recovering.
Which otter was spotted in Nepal?
The animal was an Asian small-clawed otter, Aonyx cinereus, a species described by the IUCN/SSC Otter Specialist Group and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo as the smallest of the 13 otter species. The Smithsonian says adults weigh less than 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) and can reach up to 2 feet (61 centimetres) in length; those are general species dimensions, not measurements of the Nepal juvenile. Smithsonian National Zoo species profile.
Where and when was the otter found?
The juvenile was observed in November 2024 at the confluence of the Rangun Khola and Puntara Khola in Parsuram Municipality, Dadeldhura District, in far-western Nepal. The 2025 report gives the site’s coordinates as 29.132819°N, 80.335374°E and its elevation as 401 metres. Nepal is landlocked, but this record came from a river confluence, not a coastal habitat. Shrestha et al., IUCN/SSC Otter Specialist Group Bulletin, January 2025.
What does “200 years later” mean?
The headline’s “200 years” is rounded language. The specialist-group report calls the photograph the first photographic evidence in Nepal in 185 years, counting from the last reported record in 1839 to the 2024 observation. The interval is about 185 years, not a full 200.

The long gap in records had led some to suggest that the species was extinct in Nepal, but the report does not describe a formal extinction declaration. This observation updates the evidence: the species was present in Nepal in 2024.
What happened to the juvenile?
The report says the juvenile was captured, kept at the Forest Office for a week, and then released to the wild. It does not characterize the release as a formal translocation or describe a survey of multiple otters.

Does the sighting prove Nepal has an otter population?
It confirms the species’ presence in the country, but a single photographed juvenile cannot establish a population size, a breeding population, or a recovery trend. The report’s authors infer that a juvenile suggests other otters may be nearby; that is a possibility, not a count or a demonstrated population assessment. They call for detailed study and conservation initiatives, concluding that the rare observation “is a significant confirmation of the species presence in Nepal and warrants detailed study and conservation initiatives to conserve the species.”
