Cameras, high-resolution GPS and movement loggers recorded the seabed along the animals’ foraging trips; researchers then combined those observations with environmental data and machine-learning models to predict habitat across a much larger shelf area. The 2024 pilot adds information for conservation planning, but it is not a census or a complete direct survey of Australian waters.
How sea lions helped map the seabed
The study followed eight adult female Australian sea lions (Neophoca cinerea) from two South Australian colonies: Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island and Olive Island off the western Eyre Peninsula. Each animal carried a camera together with high-resolution GPS and movement instruments, including accelerometer and magnetometer loggers, for one foraging trip.
The trips lasted two to six days. In total, the animals supplied nearly 80 hours of video covering 560 kilometres of seabed at depths from 5 to 110 metres. The methods and study scope are described in the peer-reviewed article by Grammer and colleagues and in the project’s technical report (Frontiers in Marine Science, 2024; Goldsworthy et al., technical report, November 2024).
What the instruments contributed
- Video: showed the seabed habitats encountered along each animal’s route.
- GPS: supplied the geographic position of observations at the surface and during trips.
- Movement loggers: recorded motion and orientation that helped researchers interpret diving and foraging behaviour.
- Environmental variables and models: linked observed habitats to conditions such as seabed and ocean characteristics, allowing predictions beyond the tracks actually visited.
This combination matters because sea lions can reach complex, deep and remote areas that are expensive or difficult to survey repeatedly with a research vessel or towed camera.

What the cameras saw underwater
The footage was classified into six benthic (seafloor) habitat classes:
| Habitat class | What the classification represents |
|---|---|
| Macroalgae reef | Rocky reef dominated by large seaweeds, including kelp-forming algae. |
| Macroalgae meadow | Broad areas where macroalgae form a meadow-like cover rather than a raised reef structure. |
| Bare sand | Seabed with little visible attached biological cover. |
| Sponge/sand | Sand interspersed with sponge habitat. |
| Invertebrate reef | Reef habitat characterized by attached or encrusting invertebrates. |
| Invertebrate boulder habitat | Boulder fields supporting invertebrate communities. |
Project materials report that the observations revealed rocky reefs and kelp forests that had not previously been mapped in those areas (NESP Marine and Coastal Hub).

What “more than 5,000 square kilometres mapped” means
The project reports habitat-map coverage of more than 5,000 km². That figure is primarily a modelled prediction based on the sea-lion observations and environmental information; it is not 5,000 km² of continuous seabed filmed directly by cameras. Direct video covered 560 km of seabed, while the models extended habitat predictions into areas outside the animals’ routes (NESP Marine and Coastal Hub Project 2.6; project feature).
That distinction is essential when interpreting the maps. A predicted habitat boundary carries model uncertainty and should not be treated as if every point had been inspected by a camera. The pilot also sampled only eight females from two colonies, so it cannot represent all Australian sea lions, all colonies or every habitat used by the species.

Why the maps matter for Australian sea-lion conservation
Habitat information can help managers understand where sea lions forage and where ecologically valuable reef, kelp and invertebrate communities occur. The project identifies potential uses including:
- informing marine-park and other spatial-management planning;
- helping identify or refine Biologically Important Areas;
- prioritising locations for additional seabed surveys;
- supporting assessments of ecological value and risks relevant to population recovery.
The Australian government describes follow-on underwater-camera work as a way to gather information about under-surveyed populations and critical habitat. Those are management applications and aims, not evidence that this project by itself has created new protections or reversed the species’ decline (Australian DCCEEW species page).

Population context
For context, the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water lists an estimate of 10,000–15,000 animals using estimates up to 2021, and explicitly rates confidence as low because pup production varies among breeding sites. This is not a precise current count (DCCEEW).
The camera study improves knowledge of habitat use; it does not show that the mapped habitats alone explain the species’ decline, nor does it demonstrate population recovery.

Where the cameras were deployed
Researchers fitted the camera and tracking package to each sea lion for a single foraging trip, alongside the GPS and movement loggers. The published study and project descriptions establish the animals, colonies, instruments and trip duration, but do not specify a consumer-camera mounting point that readers could reproduce. Wildlife equipment should never be attached by untrained people; deployment requires specialist animal-handling, ethics and permitting procedures.
What this pilot can—and cannot—tell us
What it demonstrates
- Animal-borne video can observe seabed habitats while a diving predator follows its normal foraging route.
- Combining footage, precise movement data and environmental modelling can extend useful habitat maps beyond directly observed tracks.
- The approach can uncover habitat features that conventional mapping has missed.
What remains uncertain
- The sample covers eight adult females and two colonies, not the species’ full range.
- Predicted areas outside the tracks are model outputs, not direct camera observations.
- The study does not establish that all six habitat classes are equally important to sea-lion survival or reproduction.
- It does not measure a population increase or prove that habitat mapping alone will deliver recovery.
Could ordinary underwater cameras replicate the work?
No consumer model or equipment vendor is identified in the study materials. An underwater action camera may be suitable for filming recreational underwater footage, but the sources do not establish that any retail camera is safe for wildlife attachment, compatible with the research sensors or capable of reproducing the deployment. The research setup was a specialised animal-borne system operated under scientific and animal-welfare controls.
