The best egg-laying chicken depends on your priorities. For the highest early output, commercial crosses such as ISA Brown and Lohmann Brown are strong candidates; White Leghorns are prolific white-egg layers; Australorps and Rhode Island Reds offer productive, substantial dual-purpose birds; and colorful-egg types add variety rather than matching commercial output. The figures below are extension estimates, not promises for every hen.

13 strong choices for a household egg flock

Annual figures marked “estimated” come from Utah State University Extension’s breed table and represent expected production under suitable management. Other entries are included because backyard keepers also need to weigh egg color, temperament, foraging, broodiness and whether a bird is a commercial cross or a heritage/dual-purpose type. Maryland Extension’s comparison resources discuss these traits together: Choosing the Best Poultry Breed for Your Small Farm and What Kind of Chickens?.

Chicken Type Estimated eggs per year Eggs and useful traits
ISA Brown Commercial hybrid 300–320 (Utah State Extension estimate) Brown eggs; selected for high early production. Expect output and longevity to depend on strain and management.
Lohmann Brown Commercial hybrid 300–320 (Utah State Extension estimate) Brown eggs; an efficient layer for keepers who value volume.
White Leghorn Recognized laying breed 280–320 (Utah State Extension estimate); Penn State notes Leghorns can exceed 300 White eggs; light-bodied, active foragers. They can be more flighty than calm dual-purpose breeds.
Australorp Heritage dual-purpose breed 250–300 (Utah State Extension estimate) Brown eggs; generally valued as a substantial, versatile flock bird rather than a specialized commercial layer.
Rhode Island Red Heritage dual-purpose breed 250–300 (Utah State Extension estimate) Brown eggs; a practical choice when eggs and a sturdier multipurpose bird both matter.
Golden Comet Commercial sex-link hybrid Not stated in the cited Utah State table Brown eggs; bred for dependable production. Treat advertised totals as strain- and management-dependent, not a guarantee.
Sex-Link Commercial cross, not one standardized breed Not stated in the cited Maryland comparison Usually chosen for brown eggs and efficient laying. Exact performance varies by the parent lines used.
Easter Egger Mixed type, not a standardized pure breed Not stated in the cited tables Blue, green, olive or other tinted eggs can occur; shell color is not predictable in every bird. UF/IFAS identifies Easter Egger as a mixed type: Raising Backyard Chickens for Eggs.
Ameraucana Recognized breed Not stated in the cited tables Blue eggs; selected for distinctive color as well as backyard usefulness. Individual lines differ in production and temperament.
Marans Recognized breed Not stated in the cited tables Dark brown eggs; a choice for shell color and a heavier dual-purpose style rather than maximum annual count.
Ancona Recognized laying breed Not stated in the cited tables White eggs; active, alert birds suited to keepers who can provide secure space and enrichment.
Minorca Recognized laying breed Not stated in the cited tables Large white eggs; valued for egg size and laying ability, with climate and housing needs to consider.
Hamburg Recognized laying breed Not stated in the cited tables White eggs; active foragers with ornamental appeal. Secure fencing is important for energetic birds.

Texas A&M AgriLife’s backyard selection guide compares 24 popular egg-production breeds across seven characteristics, reinforcing that the right starting point is what you expect from your flock: Selecting Laying Breeds for Backyard Poultry.

How to choose among them

Choose commercial hybrids for maximum early volume

ISA Brown, Lohmann Brown and other sex-link crosses are designed for efficient laying. The trade-off is that commercial types may produce more at first, while some other breeds can continue laying over more years, as the national Extension poultry resource explains: Raising Chickens for Egg Production.

Choose a heritage or dual-purpose breed for versatility

Australorp and Rhode Island Red can fit a flock that wants useful egg production without selecting solely for commercial output. Their estimates are lower than the leading hybrid range, but annual totals are only one part of the decision.

Choose by shell color only after accepting variable output

Ameraucana, Marans and Easter Egger are attractive when blue, green or dark brown shells matter. Easter Egger color is especially variable because it is a mixed type, not a standardized breed. Colorful-egg birds should not be assumed to match a 300-egg commercial cross.

Match temperament and foraging to your setup

Maryland’s breed charts compare disposition, foraging and broodiness alongside production, size and shell color. Active breeds need secure fencing; birds that become broody may pause laying while they sit. Review those traits before ordering chicks rather than choosing from an annual egg number alone.

What can reduce laying in any breed?

A breed table describes potential, not a year-round guarantee. New Hampshire Extension lists bad weather, short dark days, severe cold, frozen water, predators and insufficient or poor-quality feed among factors that can reduce daily production: Producing Your Own Eggs.

No. Hens begin laying without a male bird. Penn State Extension states that roosters are not necessary unless you want fertile eggs and chicks: What Do I Do with All These Eggs?.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Set your priority: maximum eggs, large eggs, a particular shell color, calmer behavior, foraging or a multipurpose bird.
  2. Check local conditions: heat, cold, predator pressure, available space and whether birds will be confined or ranged.
  3. Mix types deliberately: combine a high-output hybrid with a colorful-egg or dual-purpose breed if you want both quantity and variety.
  4. Buy from a reliable source: confirm the exact strain, sex, vaccination information and current availability; hatchery stock and shipping options change by location and season.
  5. Plan for care: budget for secure housing, quality feed, calcium, clean water and protection from weather.

The Bottom Line

For the most eggs early in a flock’s life, start with ISA Brown, Lohmann Brown or White Leghorn. Choose Australorp or Rhode Island Red for a productive, versatile bird, and add Ameraucana, Marans or Easter Egger when shell color is part of the goal. Good housing, feed, water and predator control determine how closely any hen approaches a published estimate.
