Does Cornstarch Kill Bugs? What It Can—and Cannot—Do

Kitchen cornstarch is not an established household insecticide. Identify the pest first, then use sanitation, exclusion, labeled bait, sealed food storage, or professional help.

Ordinary kitchen cornstarch is not an established general-purpose bug killer. University of Maryland Extension says it does not recommend cornstarch for pest control because household use has not been scientifically tested or designed for that purpose. Sprinkling it on insects, around baseboards, or across an ant trail should not be treated as a reliable insecticide.

What you should do instead depends on the pest. Identify the insect first, then use sanitation, exclusion, labeled bait, food removal, or professional treatment appropriate to that species.

What the evidence actually says about cornstarch

A June 16, 2026 response from University of Maryland Extension describes cornstarch as a home remedy and says it is not recommended because it has not been scientifically tested or designed for pest control. That is an evidence boundary, not proof that every imaginable cornstarch mixture could never affect an insect. It means ordinary pantry cornstarch has no established, general household insect-killing use in the reviewed guidance.

There are two narrower claims that should not be confused with the home-remedy idea:

  • Nearly Flavorless Culinary Aid: Formulated to be virtually tasteless, it lets the natural flavors of your dish shine through without any starchy or flour-like aftertaste.
  • Flawless, Lump-Free Texture: Whisking it with a cold liquid before adding it to hot mixtures guarantees a smooth, silky texture with incredible clarity in sauces, gravies, puddings, and pie fillings.
  • Naturally Gluten-Free: Serving as a reliable, gluten-free pantry essential, it functions as an excellent thickening alternative for those with dietary restrictions.
  • Convenient Resealable Container: Packaged in a sturdy, easy-to-store plastic tub featuring a secure, resealable lid that eliminates messy kitchen spills and keeps your starch fresh.
  • A University of Arizona school-pest training answer says talc or cornstarch in a vacuum bag can act as a desiccant and abrasive against an insect captured in the bag. This is a specific vacuum-bag statement, not advice to distribute cornstarch through a home.
  • A 2020 USDA Agricultural Research Service report concerns engineered amylose inclusion-complex emulsions that carry plant essential oils in water for laboratory work on mosquito larvae. The material is a processed formulation; it is not kitchen cornstarch used by itself.

Why pest identification comes first

Ants, pantry insects, cockroaches, fleas, and other pests do not share one control method. Oklahoma State University Extension identifies correct pest identification as the important first step. The location and behavior of the insect also matter: an ant trail at a doorway calls for a different response from beetles emerging from a bag of flour.

What to do about ants

Remove food and water sources

Wipe up spills and crumbs, clean drain boards and window sills, and store food and pet food in closed containers. Check door thresholds, cracks, and other likely access points for trails or openings.

Clabber Girl Non-GMO Corn Starch, Gluten Free, 6.5 Ounce
  • Clabber Girl Non-GMO Corn starch comes in a resealable 6.5 ounce can
  • Project Non-GMO certified
  • A naturally gluten free thickener for gravy, sauce and soup
  • Processed under Orthodox Union Kosher supervision
  • All natural

Exclude entry points

Seal likely routes around windows, doors, utility penetrations, and cracks with suitable caulk or screening. Exclusion is useful only when the opening is actually connected to the ants’ route.

Use ant-labeled bait correctly

Place a product labeled for ants where ants are actively foraging and follow that product’s directions. Species and food preference can affect whether a bait is accepted, and some baits work slowly so workers can carry material back to the nest. Maryland Extension notes that bait may need replacement and can take more than two weeks to affect a nest; that is practical guidance from the extension response, not a guaranteed timetable for every infestation.

Roots Circle 100% Pure Corn Starch |17.63oz Airtight Container | All Natural Thickener for Soups, Stews, Gravy, Baking Pies, Puddings & Cakes | Gluten-Free, Non-GMO, Vegan, Kosher, Food-Grade
  • DEVELOPS THICK AND HEARTY SOUPS AND STEWS: Corn starch, also referred to as ‘cornflour’, is a denser, courser powder made from the endosperm portion of the corn kernel. It yields a thick, non-clumpy, translucent consistency and a neutral flavor for the perfect stews, broths, or gravies.
  • THICKENS 2 TIMES MORE THAN WHITE FLOUR: A little goes a long way! With twice the thickening power of flour, corn starch is perfect for quick baking projects. Just one-part corn starch replaces two parts flour. Also try sprinkling some into your eggs for an extra-hearty delicious omelet!
  • GLUTEN-FREE AND PLANT BASED ALTERNATIVE: Corn starch is both naturally gluten-free and vegan friendly. Use corn starch as an egg substitute for your favorite vegan breads or desserts. It’s also ideal for rolling out pizza dough to prevent it from sticking to the counter or pizza stone.
  • AN ALL-PURPOSE STARCH AROUND THE HOUSE: Corn starch is a coarser multi-purpose powder that can be used for more than just baking. It not only keeps broths thicker, but it’s also a superb anti-caking agent, and can even be used for creating your own DIY homemade bath bombs!
  • PANTRY STAPLE IN A HANDY BULK PACK OF 1: Stock up with this generous bulk supply of 1 generously sized 17oz airtight container. It will help keep you stocked and ready to cook. Create tasty breaded chicken, or delectable puddings that your guests won’t forget!

Do not substitute cornstarch for labeled bait, and do not combine remedies in a way the product label does not permit. Follow all label directions, including instructions concerning people and pets.

What to do about pantry insects

Find the infested item

Inspect dry foods, seams, shelves, and nearby storage. Pantry pests can infest flour, grains, cereals, mixes, and even corn starch itself, so the presence of cornstarch in a cupboard is not evidence that it repels insects.

Remove the source and clean

Discard infested food in a sealed bag, then vacuum or wipe shelves to remove spilled material, crumbs, and debris. Check adjacent packages before returning anything to storage.

Use insect-resistant storage

Move susceptible dry goods into tightly sealed, insect-resistant containers. This prevents access and limits reinfestation; sprinkling cornstarch into a cupboard does not replace source removal or sealed storage.

How the different cornstarch claims compare

Claim or use What is established What it does not establish
Pantry cornstarch sprinkled on bugs, trails, or baseboards Maryland Extension does not recommend it; no science-based household efficacy was established in the cited guidance. Source It is not a verified general insecticide or a substitute for identification and labeled control.
Cornstarch or talc in a vacuum bag An Arizona school-pest training answer describes a desiccant and abrasive action for an insect inside the bag. Source It does not support scattering cornstarch in living areas or treating an infestation this way.
Processed cornstarch-derived emulsion carrying essential oils USDA ARS reports laboratory exposure of mosquito larvae to formulated essential-oil emulsions, with effects reported at 24 hours. Source It is not plain kitchen cornstarch, and the report does not establish a commercial household product or a mortality percentage for ordinary cornstarch.

When to call a pest professional

Seek professional help for a persistent, severe, or widespread infestation, or when you cannot identify the pest. Oklahoma State Extension lists severe and widespread problems as situations that may warrant a pest-control company. Maryland Extension advises checking that a provider holds an active state certification; licensing rules differ by location, so verify the credential with your local regulator.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the pest. Photograph it or obtain local extension help rather than assuming every small insect is an ant.
  2. Locate the activity. Note whether insects are on a trail, entering through a gap, or emerging from stored food.
  3. Remove the cause. Clean food residues, discard infested packages, and correct moisture or access conditions you can see.
  4. Choose a method labeled for that pest and site. Use ant bait for ants when appropriate, sealed containers for pantry goods, and exclusion for entry points.
  5. Monitor and reassess. Replace bait as directed and allow the label’s stated time to work; escalate if activity continues.

Bottom line for homes with pets

Cornstarch should not be presented as a dependable way to kill household bugs. Keep it as a food ingredient, not a general pesticide. Identify the pest, remove its food or breeding source, block access, and use a properly labeled treatment or a certified professional when necessary. The only cornstarch-related pest claims supported here are the narrow vacuum-bag statement and laboratory research on a specialized essential-oil formulation—neither validates sprinkling pantry cornstarch around your home.
