The animal in the spectacular backflip footage is the globular springtail Dicyrtomina minuta, a 1–2 mm arthropod. In a 2024 peer-reviewed study, its whole-body rotation averaged 282.2 rotations per second and peaked at 368.7 rotations per second—the fastest measured backflip rotation reported for an animal system.
What animal is doing the backflips?
Dicyrtomina minuta is a globular springtail, not a true fly or beetle. These tiny arthropods live among damp leaf litter. Researchers collected specimens from leaf litter in Raleigh, North Carolina, between January and March in 2020–2023, then filmed their escape jumps in the laboratory.
Because the animals are only 1–2 mm long, an ordinary camera would show little more than a blur. The study by Adrian A. Smith and Jacob S. Harrison, published in Integrative Organismal Biology in 2024, used high-speed imaging to resolve the launch, rotation and landing.
How fast is the springtail’s backflip?
The headline figure is angular rotation, and its scope matters: the study’s “fastest” claim refers to measured whole-body backflip rotation among studied animal systems, not a universal ranking of every movement made by every animal.

| Measurement | What the study recorded |
|---|---|
| Average rotation rate | 282.2 rotations per second (Hz) |
| Peak rotation rate | 368.7 rotations per second |
| Average take-off velocity | 1 m/s reached in 1.7 ms |
| Fastest acceleration to liftoff | 1,938 m/s² |
| Maximum vertical travel | 62 mm |
| Maximum horizontal travel | 102 mm, moving backward |
For an animal shorter than a grain of rice, those distances are enormous relative to body length. The springtail’s linear performance sits between that reported for fleas and froghoppers, while its angular rotation is the exceptional feature.
How can such a tiny bug flip so fast?
The furca acts like a spring-loaded catapult
Under the abdomen is a forked appendage called the furca. When the springtail is startled, it releases the furca against the surface beneath it. That sudden contact launches the body upward and backward while imparting a powerful rotational impulse.

The result is not a single slow somersault. The body enters continuous backward rotation almost immediately after liftoff. Smith described it as “the closest you can get to a Sonic the Hedgehog jump in real life.”
The launch happens in milliseconds
The animals reached an average take-off speed of 1 m/s in just 1.7 ms. The fastest measured acceleration to liftoff was 1,938 m/s². Those values describe the launch phase measured in the experiment; they are not a sustained running speed or a repeated performance over a long distance.

Which direction does a globular springtail jump?
From a flat surface, the springtails did not launch forward. Their escape path was upward and backward, combined with the rapid backflip. That direction is a consequence of how the furca strikes the substrate and is useful for creating immediate separation from a threat without requiring the animal to turn first.
How was the super-slow-motion video filmed?
- Collection: The team gathered globular springtails locally from Raleigh leaf litter during January–March field periods in 2020–2023.
- Test surface: Each specimen was placed on a flat acrylic platform.
- Stimulation: Researchers triggered escape jumps with light or a gentle brush touch.
- Imaging: A Phantom VEO 1310 high-speed camera recorded at 40,322 frames per second.
- Optics and light: A Canon MP-E 65 mm ultra-macro lens and controlled LED illumination provided the magnification and short exposures needed to freeze the motion.
At 40,322 frames per second, a movement that takes roughly one thousandth of a second is spread across dozens of recorded frames. That lets researchers calculate rotation rate, acceleration, trajectory and landing behavior instead of relying on a visually impressive but unmeasurable blur.

Do the springtails always land cleanly?
No. The study found two broad outcomes. In some jumps, the collophore—a ventral adhesive structure—anchored the animal and produced a controlled stop. In others, the springtail continued into uncontrolled tumbling. The backflip is therefore an effective escape launch, but not every jump ends with a gymnast-like landing.
Is this really the fastest animal backflip?
Within the measured comparisons reported by the 2024 study, yes: the globular springtail had the highest recorded whole-body angular rotation rate, peaking at 368.7 rotations per second. The wording should not be expanded into “the fastest movement by any animal” because different studies measure different body parts, maneuvers and conditions. Fleas and froghoppers can outperform springtails on some linear jumping measures, while the springtail stands out for rotational speed.

- NEW SCROLLBAR FEATURE: On the Quick View Mode (double row), slide from the start of your SD card to the end in seconds, even with thousands of pictures
Smith summarized the result this way: “No other animal on Earth does a backflip faster than a globular springtail.” In scientific terms, that statement refers to the animal backflip measurements examined in the study.
Why the footage matters
The video turns a nearly invisible escape reflex into a measurable piece of biomechanics. It shows how a 1–2 mm animal can store and release mechanical energy through the furca, leave the ground in 1.7 ms, travel up to 62 mm vertically or 102 mm horizontally, and rotate hundreds of times per second. The same recording also reveals the trade-off: explosive launch and extreme rotation can end either in adhesive control or in a tumble.
