The hummingbird hawk moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) is a day-flying hawk-moth that hovers at flowers and drinks nectar through a long proboscis. In a garden, its visits can support the general pollination service provided by moths, while nectar plants also provide food for other wildlife. You can make a garden more suitable by growing reliable nectar sources for adults and bedstraw (Galium) for its caterpillars, but no plant guarantees a sighting.
How to identify a hummingbird hawk moth
UKMoths gives this species a wingspan of 40–50 mm. Its rapid wingbeats, hovering flight and habit of remaining in front of a flower while feeding make it look remarkably like a tiny hummingbird. It usually feeds in sunshine rather than waiting for darkness, so watch flowering beds on warm, bright days.
Adults use a long proboscis to reach nectar. They may arrive, hover for a few seconds, and leave without landing. Fuchsia is among the garden flowers noted as a daytime feeding site in Butterfly Conservation’s identification guide (Butterfly Conservation moths ID guide).
For photographs and the diagnostic features of the species, see the UKMoths account for Macroglossum stellatarum.

Where and when you may see it
Migration and breeding patterns vary by place. In Britain, Butterfly Conservation describes the hummingbird hawk moth as a migrant from the Mediterranean and North Africa. Its 27 May 2026 guidance says it may turn up almost anywhere in the UK, with numbers generally peaking in summer. Some individuals now breed in Britain, and a small number of offspring may survive milder winters (Butterfly Conservation, “Migratory moths to look out for in 2026”).
Those statements are UK-specific observations, not a fixed timetable or a description of every country. A warm summer, local flowers and weather during migration can all affect whether you see one.
How does it benefit your garden?
It can contribute to pollination
The Royal Horticultural Society says moths can provide pollination services. Because adult hummingbird hawk moths move between flowers while feeding, their visits can contribute to that service in a garden (RHS, “Moths in your garden”). The available sources do not establish a species-specific pollination rate, a measured effect on garden crops or a ranking against bees and other pollinators, so the benefit is best described as useful but unquantified.
It adds daytime wildlife interest
This is one of the few moths people commonly notice in daylight. A hovering visitor can help you discover which flowers are producing nectar and may indicate that your garden offers habitat for other moths and insects. The RHS notes that gardens can be valuable moth habitat when they provide both nectar and caterpillar food plants.

Its caterpillars use a different resource
Adult moths drink nectar, but larvae eat leaves. The identified food plant for hummingbird hawk-moth caterpillars is bedstraw (Galium), so a nectar-rich border alone does not provide everything needed for the life cycle. Check local growing advice before introducing or retaining any plant.
What plants attract hummingbird hawk moths?
The RHS lists the following plants as nectar sources that can attract day-flying moths such as the hummingbird hawk moth. These are suggestions, not guarantees.
| Plant | Primary role | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Sea lavender | Adult nectar | Listed by the RHS among plants that can attract day-flying moths. |
| Buddleia | Adult nectar | Listed by the RHS for attracting day-flying moths. |
| Red valerian (Centranthus ruber) | Adult nectar | RHS-listed nectar plant for day-flying moths. |
| Lychnis | Adult nectar | RHS-listed nectar plant for day-flying moths. |
| Fuchsia | Adult nectar | Butterfly Conservation’s guide notes garden fuchsia as a feeding site. |
| Bedstraw (Galium) | Caterpillar food | Identified as a larval food plant; it is not a substitute for adult nectar plants. |
Plant details and the distinction between nectar and caterpillar resources are covered in the RHS guidance on moths in your garden and plants for moths. The sources do not compare these flowers by attractiveness, nectar volume or regional performance, so choose among them according to your soil, space, climate and local planting guidance.
How to make a garden more moth-friendly
- Provide a succession of flowers. Combine suitable nectar plants so that something is flowering across the season rather than relying on a single short-lived display.
- Include the larval resource. Where it is appropriate for your area, retain or grow bedstraw (Galium) as a potential food plant for caterpillars.
- Use sunny, sheltered positions. Adults are most conspicuous when they can feed in sunshine; place nectar flowers where they receive the light and warmth their growing conditions require.
- Avoid treating a visit as a guarantee. Migratory arrivals, weather and local habitat determine whether a moth appears, even when suitable flowers are present.
- Keep expectations realistic. A moth-friendly garden supports habitat and possible pollination, but the reviewed sources do not quantify how much fruit, seed or crop production a hummingbird hawk moth causes.
Common misconceptions
“It is a hummingbird.”
No. The resemblance comes from hovering flight and rapid wingbeats. It is a moth, with the scientific name Macroglossum stellatarum.

“Any flower will attract one.”
Flowering plants improve the opportunity for a visit, but the RHS wording is that named plants can attract day-flying moths. It does not promise sightings.
“Nectar plants feed the caterpillars.”
They do not serve the same life stage. Adults take nectar; larvae feed on host-plant leaves such as bedstraw.
“British seasonal patterns apply everywhere.”
The migration, summer peak and occasional British breeding reported for 2026 describe Britain. Other regions can have different ranges and seasons.
Quick Recap
What to do when you see one
- Watch from a short distance rather than trying to catch it; hovering adults move quickly between flowers.
- Note the date, weather and plant being visited. Such records can help local recording schemes, especially during migration periods.
- Take a photograph only if it can be done without disturbing the moth, and use the UKMoths or Butterfly Conservation guides for confirmation.
