Scientists trace bed bugs’ ancient link to humans—and their evolution

Bedbugs did not originate simply because of humans or necessarily start as bat parasites. Genome and fossil evidence reveal ancient host associations, a major human-lineage expansion about 13,000 years ago and adaptations for life on blood and around people.

Bed bugs were not simply created by humans, nor can scientists show that they began as bat parasites. The evidence points to a much older story: bedbug lineages diversified before bats, while a human-associated population of the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) may have followed people for hundreds of thousands of years. Its biggest measured population expansion occurred about 13,000 years ago, during major human demographic and settlement changes.

That distinction matters. One set of studies examines deep species history; another reconstructs the recent history of populations living with humans. Together they show ancient host association, later expansion and adaptation—not a simple case of humans driving the original birth of the species.

What the new evidence shows

A 2025 whole-genome study identified two genetically distinct groups within the common bed bug: one associated mainly with humans and one associated with bats. Demographic modelling suggests that the human-associated lineage underwent a major effective-population expansion approximately 13,000 years ago. The same analysis places the beginning of its association with humans potentially hundreds of thousands of years ago.

The 13,000-year figure is a modelled population-history estimate, not an archaeological discovery of insects from that exact date. Likewise, “hundreds of thousands of years” is an inferred time for an association, not a continuous collection of dated specimens.

Were bed bugs originally bat parasites?

Not in the broad, evolutionary sense implied by that question. A fossil-calibrated molecular phylogeny published in 2019 found that bedbug diversification predates bats. The lineages containing the common bed bug and the tropical bed bug (Cimex hemipterus) split approximately 47 million years ago—before the bat-host relationship often used in popular origin stories.

This result rejects two overly simple explanations:

  • Dust Mite Mattress Cover and Allergen Barrier: The tight knit and sealed zipper keep dust mite allergens shut inside the mattress instead of drifting into bedding; and rest easier knowing the fabric on your skin is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified
  • Size and Depth: This Queen mattress encasement fits a mattress measuring 60 by 80 inches and 12 inches deep, stretching up to 13; measure yours first, then slip this zippered waterproof bed bug proof cover down like a pillowcase, and zip it closed
  • that humans caused the original split between the major bedbug species; and
  • that bedbugs merely co-speciated with ancient humans as humans evolved.

Some common bedbugs are associated with bats and others with humans, but that present-day host pattern does not prove that all bedbugs began on bats. Host associations can change over deep time, and the 47-million-year estimate concerns lineage diversification, not the later history of human-associated populations.

How long have bed bugs lived with humans?

The strongest answer has three different time scales:

  1. About 3,000 years of documented association: the bedbug genome project described a human relationship extending at least this far in the historical record.
  2. Potentially hundreds of thousands of years of inferred association: the 2025 genome study’s demographic analysis points to a much older relationship than written or archaeological records can directly show.
  3. About 13,000 years for a major expansion: the human-associated lineage’s effective population size increased around this time, according to the model.

These dates answer different questions. The 3,000-year figure describes documentation; the older estimate describes inferred association; and 13,000 years marks a demographic expansion. None should be presented as the date when the first bed bug entered a human dwelling.

Did humans cause bed bugs to evolve?

Humans likely shaped the success of some bedbug populations, but the evidence does not show that humans caused bedbugs’ original species split. The sequenced bedbug genome contains features consistent with a highly specialized blood-feeding lifestyle, including reduced chemosensory gene repertoires and expansions in genes associated with blood digestion and pesticide resistance.

Those changes can help bedbugs locate hosts, feed exclusively on blood and survive chemical control. They describe adaptation in the bedbug genome; they do not, by themselves, establish when each change occurred or prove that human activity selected every one of them.

The clearest human-linked signal in the 2025 demographic study is expansion of an existing lineage as human populations and early urban settlements grew. In other words, people appear to have provided an increasingly stable ecological opportunity for bedbugs that were already evolutionarily distinct.

What the major studies actually tested

Study Main question Evidence Time scale What it supports
Miles and colleagues, 2025 How did human- and bat-associated common bedbug populations change? Whole genomes and demographic models Major expansion about 13,000 years ago; association potentially hundreds of thousands of years old An ancient human association followed by substantial population growth
Roth and colleagues, 2019 When did major bedbug lineages diverge? Fossil-calibrated molecular phylogeny Approximately 47 million years for the split between clades containing C. lectularius and C. hemipterus Bedbug diversification predates bats and was not caused by human evolution
Castex and colleagues, 2025 Are nearby human- and bat-associated bugs genetically structured? Local population-genetic sampling in western Switzerland Present-day populations Distinct host-associated clusters in that region, with sharply different resistance-marker frequencies
Benoit and colleagues, 2016 What does the reference bedbug genome reveal? Genome sequencing and comparative analysis Historical association documented for roughly 3,000 years Evidence of blood-feeding specialization and genes linked to pesticide resistance

Are human and bat bed bugs genetically different?

They can be. In western Switzerland, the 2025 local-scale study found human- and bat-associated bugs in separate genetic clusters. It also detected knock-down-resistance (KDR) variants—changes associated with resistance to some insecticides—in 99% of sampled human-associated bugs and 0% of sampled bat-associated bugs.

Those percentages describe that study’s samples and location, not every bedbug population. They do show how strongly host association and human exposure to insecticides can coincide. A bug living around homes may face repeated pesticide treatments that a bat-roost population does not, creating different selection pressures.

A timeline that keeps the claims straight

  • At least 47 million years ago: the lineages containing common and tropical bedbugs split, according to the fossil-dated phylogeny.
  • Hundreds of thousands of years ago, potentially: the human-associated common-bedbug lineage began its long association with people, according to genomic inference.
  • About 13,000 years ago: that lineage experienced a major modelled demographic expansion.
  • About 3,000 years ago and afterward: historical evidence documents bedbugs living with humans.
  • Today: human- and bat-associated populations can remain genetically structured, and resistance variants may be concentrated in bugs exposed to household insecticides.

What this means for bedbug control now

The evolutionary findings do not replace practical pest-management guidance. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends integrated pest management rather than relying on one treatment. Useful physical measures include bed-bug-proof mattress and box-spring encasements and interceptor traps placed under bed legs.

Steam can be part of a plan when used carefully: EPA guidance specifies a diffuser and steam of at least 130°F, with airflow controlled so bugs are not scattered. Use only pesticides registered and labelled for bed bugs, and do not rely on foggers alone. If an infestation persists, an appropriately qualified professional using an integrated approach is safer than repeated, unlabelled chemical use.

The defensible bottom line

Bed bugs have an ancient evolutionary history that predates humans, and their major lineages did not arise simply because humans evolved. But one common-bedbug lineage has probably accompanied people for far longer than written records suggest, expanded dramatically around 13,000 years ago and acquired traits suited to blood feeding and persistence in human environments. “Ancient human companion” is therefore more accurate than either “human-made pest” or “originally just a bat parasite.”
