Ancient DNA Reveals 11,000 Years of Intertwined History Between Humans and Sheep

Ancient sheep DNA links western Fertile Crescent domestication, visible-trait selection and Bronze Age steppe migrations to the spread of pastoralism across Eurasia.

Domestic sheep originated in the western part of the northern Fertile Crescent, where people gradually managed wild flocks before carrying them across Eurasia. Ancient genomes now show that domestication involved several wild ancestries, visible-trait selection and repeated movements with herding communities—not a single, isolated origin event.

The same DNA record links Bronze Age sheep movements to the spread of people, dairying and pastoralism, while showing why the ancestry of modern sheep remains difficult to reduce to one simple family tree.

What the ancient-DNA study examined

Daly and colleagues, writing in Science in 2025, analyzed 118 ancient sheep genomes covering approximately 12,000 years. The samples extend from Mongolia to Ireland, allowing the team to compare early managed animals with later flocks across a wide part of Eurasia.

Genomes provide a different kind of evidence from archaeology. Bones can show changing herd structure, diet or body size; DNA can identify ancestry, gene flow and selection. Used together, those signals produce a more detailed account of how sheep and people changed one another’s history.

Where domestic sheep came from

The strongest geographic conclusion is a western origin in the northern Fertile Crescent. Wild sheep from Lebanon and Türkiye are genetically closer to domestic sheep than wild sheep from the eastern Zagros, arguing against the idea that domestication began in a single eastern Zagros heartland.

Early genomes from central Türkiye are close to domestic sheep, but they do not by themselves explain all of the ancestry found in later domestic flocks. The emerging picture is therefore a mosaic: several related wild populations contributed to domestication or to early managed herds, and later movements mixed those lineages.

How domestication unfolded

Archaeological signs of management

In the northern Fertile Crescent, management traces appear by the mid-ninth millennium BCE. Archaeologists identify domestication processes through a combination of evidence:

Selection became visible in the genome

By roughly 8,000 years ago, herders were selecting conspicuous traits, especially coat colour and pattern. The clearest early signal lies near KIT and related pigmentation regions, suggesting that appearance was being shaped intentionally or indirectly through breeding choices.

How sheep spread with Bronze Age people

Early European flocks show ancestry connected to Türkiye. During the Bronze Age, a major influx from the Eurasian steppe altered that pattern: Daly et al. estimate that 44–61% of the ancestry of European sheep from the Bronze Age onward came from Western-steppe-related sources. This is an ancestry estimate for European sheep across that broad period, not a claim that every flock or breed received the same proportion.

Soak for 5 to 10 minutes with wool detergent, gently squeeze the suds out (do not rub, twist, or wring), and rinse in clear, cold water. Pull carefully to shape. Always dry flat and never put in a tumble drier. The Golden Rule for caring for a wool garment is to wash it as seldom as possible and air frequently.

Kevin Daly described the event as “a major prehistoric sheep migration from the Eurasian steppes into Europe during the Bronze Age.” He added that it “parallels what we know about human migrations during the same period,” because people moving across the continent appear to have transported their flocks with them.

That animal movement fits a wider social transformation. An LMU Munich institutional account reports around 90% change in British human ancestry associated with the steppe-era transformation; that figure concerns people, not sheep, but it illustrates the scale of the contemporaneous human shift. Sheep could travel as living stores of meat, fat, milk and breeding stock, making herds practical companions to mobile pastoralism.

Which sheep traits were selected

Ancient genomes contain signals at several regions associated with traits useful or noticeable to herders. A selection signal identifies changing genetic frequencies; it does not, by itself, reveal exactly why an individual breeder made a particular choice.

Genomic region Associated trait or function
KIT and MC1R Coat pigmentation and colour pattern
RXFP2 Horn shape
GHR Growth rate
SHCBP1 Wool morphology
TBC1D12 Climate adaptation
Variant near IRF2BP2 Fleece-fibre characteristics

The early prominence of pigmentation signals is especially informative because colour is immediately visible. Later signals point to a growing emphasis on body development, horns, fleece and survival in different climates.

What people used sheep for

The combined archaeological and genomic picture is consistent with changing priorities over time:

  • Meat and fat: early management could provide reliable food without requiring a hunt for every meal.
  • Milk and probably cheese: the institutional account of the study suggests that dairying, and especially cheese production, may have helped power sheep’s expansion across Eurasia. Cheese also converts perishable milk into a portable food.
  • Wool and textiles: selection signals affecting wool morphology and fleece fibres show that fibre properties eventually became breeding targets.
  • Mobile herding: sheep could accompany pastoralists, linking animal movement to seasonal grazing, trade and migration.

These uses overlapped rather than replacing one another everywhere at the same moment. Local environments, diets and cultural choices would have determined which benefit mattered most.

What ancient DNA reveals—and what it cannot settle

What genomes add

  • They distinguish ancestry from appearance, helping separate local adaptation from the arrival of new flocks.
  • They reveal gene flow that may leave no obvious archaeological trace.
  • They connect animal movements with broader human migration patterns.
  • They identify selection at traits such as colour, horns, growth, fleece and climate response.

Why the story remains incomplete

Later sheep landraces are genetically complex. Their diversity reflects repeated mixing, regional selection and movements that cannot be assigned to one founding population with confidence. The precise contributions of multiple wild populations, and the timing of some dispersals and selection events, therefore remain unresolved.

Joris Peters, a co-corresponding author, said that the study reconciles morphological and genomic evidence for the geographic origin of domestic sheep while showing that further work is needed to explain the dispersal and selection histories of the many landraces in Eurasia and Africa. Answering those questions will require archaeology, genetics, zooarchaeology, ecology and studies of pastoral economies together.

Why this history matters

Sheep domestication was a long partnership rather than a one-time invention. People changed which animals survived and reproduced; sheep supplied food, fibre and mobility; and both species travelled through landscapes transformed by herding. Ancient DNA makes that partnership visible at continental scale, turning scattered bones and modern breeds into parts of one evolving history.
