“Poop like an elephant” is usually metaphorical. In the saying “Eat like a bird, and poop like an elephant,” it means to turn what you have learned into a substantial, useful presentation or contribution. Guy Kawasaki is often credited, but available accounts are secondary and do not conclusively establish the phrase’s original source.
The meaning of “poop like an elephant”
The phrase describes the output side of learning. “Eat like a bird” suggests taking in information in small portions; “poop like an elephant” suggests combining those experiences and sharing something substantial, practical and honest.
It is not advice about digestion, quantity of food or a required presentation length. The useful interpretation is: learn continuously, then give other people a clear result they can use.
Who said “eat like a bird, poop like an elephant”?
A 2008 Fire Summer fire-service publication prints the wording “Eat like a bird, and Poop like an elephant” and attributes it to Guy Kawasaki. An Ed Tseng post from 2011 also links the phrase to Kawasaki and to Rules for Revolutionaries. These are secondary attributions; no primary Kawasaki source confirming the exact origin was identified.

If you mention the book, its full title is Rules for Revolutionaries: The Capitalist Manifesto for Creating and Marketing New Products and Services. The phrase is associated with that book, but you do not need to read it to understand the expression.

Take in small, varied inputs
Read, observe, test and listen rather than waiting for one dramatic insight. Small experiences provide the material for a stronger final explanation.

Combine the pieces
Do the thinking between intake and output: identify the pattern, separate evidence from assumption and decide what matters to your audience.
Deliver something useful
A substantial output is not the same as a long one. A concise guide, demonstration, lesson or decision memo can “poop like an elephant” if it contains the relevant details and does not inflate claims.

Keep the result honest
The metaphor works best when “substantial” means well-supported and useful, not exaggerated. Say what you know, what you inferred and what remains uncertain.
If you mean it literally: how long does elephant defecation take?
Science News’ 2017 account of research by Patricia Yang and colleagues reported an average expulsion time of about 12 seconds for the cylindrical feces studied across the animal species observed, which included elephants. That is a study average under defined conditions—not a stopwatch rule for every elephant, every bowel movement or every mammal.

Why elephant dung matters beyond the joke
Elephant dung is part of an ecosystem, not merely waste. The Natural History Museum describes elephants depositing fruit seeds in dung as they travel, helping move those seeds through the landscape. This gives the literal image an additional ecological dimension: what leaves the animal can support new growth elsewhere.
The clearest takeaway
Read “poop like an elephant” as a memorable presentation principle: absorb information steadily, process it carefully and share a useful result at meaningful scale. Treat Guy Kawasaki’s authorship as commonly reported rather than proven, and treat the roughly 12-second figure as a limited study finding rather than a universal fact about elephants.
