Do Dogs Need Vitamin C? The Answer May Surprise You

Dogs usually synthesize enough vitamin C themselves. Find out when supplementation may be medically appropriate—and why urinary stones or copper storage disease require caution.

Usually, no. Dogs make vitamin C (ascorbic acid) from glucose in their liver, and AAFCO has not established a dietary vitamin C requirement for dogs. For a healthy dog eating a complete, balanced diet, routine vitamin C supplements are generally unnecessary. A veterinarian may still recommend it for a specific condition, but that is different from using it as an everyday wellness product.

Why dogs usually do not need a vitamin C supplement

Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant and helps the body make collagen, a structural protein used in skin, connective tissue, blood vessels and bone. Those functions are important, but a nutrient’s role in the body does not prove that giving extra amounts improves health when a dog already produces it.

Merck Veterinary Manual explains that dogs and cats synthesize vitamin C from glucose in the liver. Because of that internal production, AAFCO has no dietary vitamin C requirement for dogs. Merck also does not identify vitamin C as a micronutrient that is commonly depleted in dogs.

The available guidance does not establish a general health benefit or a routine preventive dose for healthy dogs. Claims that extra vitamin C will broadly “boost immunity” or prevent disease go beyond what these veterinary sources establish.

When a veterinarian might use vitamin C

Vitamin C can have a place in treatment when a clinician has identified a specific indication. VCA lists veterinary-directed uses including antioxidant support in certain toxin-related methemoglobinemia cases in dogs and cats, and use as a urinary acidifier.

These are medical applications, not evidence that every dog should receive a supplement. The appropriate product, amount and duration depend on the diagnosis, other treatments and the dog’s health history. The sources reviewed here do not provide a universally appropriate dose for routine use.

Oral forms

VCA describes tablets, capsules, liquids and powders as available oral forms. A veterinarian should select the form and instructions for an individual patient rather than relying on a human product label or a generic internet dose.

Risks and dogs that need extra caution

Calcium oxalate stone history

Vitamin C is water-soluble, but excess is not automatically harmless. Ascorbic acid can break down into oxalate. Merck warns that excessive supplementation is a concern in dogs with a history of calcium oxalate urolithiasis because additional oxalate may increase urinary oxalate. VCA likewise advises caution in animals with kidney or bladder stones.

Copper storage disease or copper toxicosis

Dogs with copper storage hepatopathy, copper storage disease or copper toxicosis should not receive ascorbic acid without veterinary direction. VCA says not to use it in these dogs, and Merck advises avoiding vitamin C supplements in copper storage hepatopathy because they may worsen oxidative injury associated with transition-metal accumulation.

Other medical conditions and medicines

A dog’s complete history matters before any supplement is added. Kidney or bladder problems, prior stone analysis, liver disease and concurrent medications can all change the risk–benefit decision. A supplement that is reasonable for one patient may be unsuitable for another.

How to decide whether your dog should receive it

  1. Start with the reason. Identify the diagnosed condition or treatment goal. “General health” is not, by itself, an established indication for routine vitamin C in dogs.
  2. Review the medical history. Tell the veterinarian about calcium oxalate or other urinary stones, kidney or bladder disease, copper storage disease, copper toxicosis, liver disease and every medication or supplement.
  3. Use the instructed product and dose. If vitamin C is recommended, follow the veterinarian’s exact form, amount, schedule and duration. Do not substitute a human chewable, powder or multivitamin without approval.
  4. Reassess rather than continuing automatically. A treatment-related supplement may be intended for a limited period. Ask when the dog should be checked and whether it should be stopped or adjusted.

Healthy dog versus veterinary indication

Situation What the evidence supports Practical action
Healthy dog eating a complete, balanced diet Dogs synthesize vitamin C; AAFCO has no dietary requirement; no routine benefit or dose is established. Do not add vitamin C routinely. Ask your veterinarian before adding any vitamin or mineral.
Specific diagnosed condition VCA lists selected clinical uses, including certain toxin-related methemoglobinemia cases and urinary acidification. Use only under veterinary direction, with the prescribed product and instructions.
History of calcium oxalate stones or other urinary stones Excess vitamin C can increase oxalate; VCA advises caution with kidney or bladder stones. Discuss stone type and urinary risks before giving any ascorbic acid.
Copper storage disease or copper toxicosis Veterinary sources advise avoiding or not using vitamin C because of potential oxidative injury. Do not supplement unless the treating veterinarian specifically directs it.

What about vitamin C in dog food?

A complete, balanced dog food is formulated to meet established nutrient requirements without relying on a dietary vitamin C requirement. The fact that a food or treat lists ascorbic acid does not mean your dog needs an additional supplement, and it does not establish a therapeutic benefit.

Questions to ask your veterinarian

  • What specific diagnosis or treatment goal is vitamin C intended to address?
  • Does my dog’s stone, kidney, bladder, liver or copper-disease history change the recommendation?
  • Which formulation and dose should I use, and for how long?
  • What signs would mean I should stop it or call the clinic?
  • When should we reassess whether it is helping?

Bottom line

Most dogs do not need supplemental vitamin C because they make it themselves. Extra ascorbic acid should be treated as a veterinary intervention for selected cases, not as a default immune or wellness supplement. Because excess may increase oxalate and because vitamin C may be inappropriate in copper storage disease, get veterinary advice before giving it—especially to a dog with urinary stones, kidney or bladder disease, or liver copper-accumulation problems.
