Ocellaris clownfish, one royal gramma, a firefish, or a Banggai cardinalfish can each fit the volume guidance in their care profiles, but adult size, tank footprint, rockwork, temperament and filtration determine what can safely live together.
Use the species below as a shortlist, then introduce a conservative combination after assessing each fish’s territory and behavior. The minimum volumes cited are retailer recommendations, not a guaranteed recipe for every 55-gallon aquarium.
Best fish to consider
| Fish | Published minimum guidance | Temperament and habitat | Special considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) | 20 gallons (LiveAquaria profile) | Peaceful and reef compatible; occupies rockwork and the water column | A pair is a familiar 55-gallon option, but the profile does not validate a particular mixed-species combination. Water guidance listed by LiveAquaria is 72–78°F, specific gravity 1.020–1.025, pH 8.1–8.4 and dKH 8–12. LiveAquaria profile |
| Royal gramma (Gramma loreto) | 30 gallons (LiveAquaria profile) | Generally suitable with passive tankmates; claims a cave or crevice | Keep one per tank according to the profile because it can be territorial toward its own kind. Provide several caves and visual breaks. LiveAquaria profile and care guide |
| Firefish | The beginner guide lists 20 gallons | Shy, shelter-seeking fish for peaceful communities | Adults reach roughly 3.5–4 inches, need secure hiding places and are accomplished jumpers. Use a tight-fitting lid or mesh screen measured to your aquarium’s actual rim and dimensions. LiveAquaria beginner guide |
| Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) | 30 gallons (LiveAquaria profile) | Peaceful community fish that uses cave-like rockwork | Choose peaceful tankmates and avoid a large group; the profile warns of aggression toward conspecifics. Consider an individual or a carefully matched pair rather than assuming schooling is safe. LiveAquaria profile |
How to choose among them
Start with adult size and the actual footprint
A 55-gallon label describes volume, not the length, width or swimming area available. Compare the fish’s adult size with your aquarium’s footprint, and leave room for rockwork, open-water movement and territories. A fish that meets a published minimum can still be unsuitable if the aquascape leaves little usable space.
Match temperament and territory
Royal grammas may defend a preferred cave, while firefish are more easily intimidated and need retreats. Arrange rock so timid fish can disappear from view and no single fish can control every shelter. Add passive species before more territorial residents when possible, and watch for persistent chasing, cornering or refusal to eat.
#1 Best Overall
- 13.5 gallon glass aquarium for saltwater fish
- Stylish honeycomb design conceals rear aquarium filter compartment and aquarium water line while looking ultra modern
- Powerful 3 stage filtration with oversized mechanical, chemical, and biological Fluval filter media
- Multifunctional canopy with easy feed door

Decide whether the aquarium is reef-oriented
LiveAquaria describes ocellaris clownfish as reef compatible. For every other choice, confirm that the fish’s diet and behavior suit your particular corals and invertebrates; “fits the gallonage” does not by itself establish reef safety.
Practical 55-gallon combinations to evaluate
These are examples of combinations to assess—not guaranteed stocking recipes. Introduce fish gradually and stop if behavior or water quality shows the plan is too ambitious.

- 🐠 EVERYTHING YOU NEED - Feature a compact and customizable filtration chamber that is already built-in to the back of the aquarium – easy to setup and maintain
- 🐠 GREAT FEATURES – Includes quiet submersible pump, dual intakes and adjustable return nozzle. Compatible with all existing BioCube accessories. Fish, corals, substrate and décor are sold separately.
- 🐠 SLEEK & MODERN – Biocubes feature a rounded edge design and is the perfect innovative all-inclusive aquarium for all needs!
- 🐠 VIBRANT LED LIGHTING - Low-profile hood contains vibrant LED lighting that is capable of sustaining and growing healthy, vibrant corals and live plants.
- 🐠 MAXIMIZE BEAUTY - 24-hour timer which makes it easy to control the three independent light channels for maximum beauty: bright white, sparkling blue and color enhancing LEDs.
- Clownfish-centered community: a pair of ocellaris clownfish as the focal fish, with at most a carefully selected peaceful companion after evaluating territory and filtration.
- Cave-oriented community: one royal gramma with peaceful, similarly sized tankmates and multiple separated caves.
- Shy-fish setup: one firefish with calm companions, abundant shelter and a properly fitted cover.
- Cardinalfish option: one Banggai cardinalfish, or a demonstrably compatible pair, with peaceful tankmates and cave-like rockwork; do not assume a large group will work.
The cited care profiles do not establish an exact safe fish count for every 55-gallon aquarium. Bioload, feeding, maintenance, filtration, aquascape and individual behavior all change the practical limit.
Setup details that prevent common problems
Build usable shelter
Use stable live-rock or reef-safe structures to create caves, overhangs and visual barriers. Give the royal gramma and Banggai cardinal a cave they can claim without blocking all other retreats. Firefish need a bolt-hole close to their normal swimming area so they do not remain exposed.

Secure the top before adding a firefish
Firefish can jump through surprisingly small openings. Choose a lid or mesh screen by measuring the tank’s length, width and rim style; “55 gallon” is not a universal cover size. Keep plumbing cut-outs and feeding gaps as small as practical.
Keep water conditions stable
For ocellaris clownfish, LiveAquaria lists 72–78°F, specific gravity 1.020–1.025, pH 8.1–8.4 and dKH 8–12. Treat these as that retailer’s care guidance and maintain stable, tested conditions rather than chasing a single number. The other profiles emphasize appropriate habitat and peaceful tankmates but do not provide a complete, universal parameter set.

Fish not to treat as ordinary 55-gallon choices
The Saltwaterfish.com species guide lists both yellow tang and blue tang at a 75-gallon minimum. On that published guidance, they are not routine choices for a 55-gallon aquarium. Their popularity does not override adult size and swimming-space requirements. Saltwaterfish.com species guide
A conservative selection checklist
- Measure the aquarium’s inside footprint and confirm the cover or screen fits the rim.
- List each candidate’s adult size, published minimum volume, temperament and habitat needs.
- Design caves and sightline breaks before buying fish; provide more than one retreat.
- Choose peaceful tankmates and avoid combining multiple fish that defend the same limited shelter.
- Add fish in a deliberate order, observe feeding and aggression, and be prepared to rehome a fish that is persistently bullied or bullying.
- Reassess the aquarium’s bioload and maintenance capacity after every addition instead of filling the tank to a presumed maximum.
Bottom line
For most 55-gallon saltwater systems, start your shortlist with ocellaris clownfish, a single royal gramma, a firefish or a Banggai cardinalfish. Select only a compatible subset, provide species-specific shelter, cover jump-prone fish and reject larger tangs whose cited minimum is 75 gallons. A 55-gallon rating is a starting point; the finished stocking plan must fit the fish, aquascape and behavior of your individual aquarium.
