The animal is the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). A preliminary 2024 bioRxiv preprint found that DNA-methylation clocks predict age during early life, then largely stop correlating with chronological age. Regenerated structures also showed younger molecular patterns. That is not proof that an axolotl stops all aging, becomes immortal, or makes its whole body younger.
What animal is this?
Axolotls are salamanders best known for regenerating limbs and other body structures while remaining aquatic as adults. The headline’s “biological clock” refers to an epigenetic clock: a statistical age estimate built from chemical tags on DNA, especially DNA methylation. It is a measurement tool, not a timer that can literally be switched off.
What the axolotl study measured
Haluza and colleagues reported the first axolotl DNA-methylation epigenetic clocks in a bioRxiv preprint posted on September 10, 2024. They examined clocks made for individual tissues as well as a pan-tissue clock that combines samples from multiple tissues.
A two-phase, or biphasic, pattern
The clocks worked during early life: methylation changes allowed the models to estimate an animal’s age. Later, the relationship between methylation and chronological age became weak enough that the clocks no longer predicted age reliably for the remainder of the measured lifespan.

A remarkably stable methylome
The authors describe the axolotl methylome—the animal’s overall DNA-methylation pattern—as remarkably stable across lifespan. That stability also appeared at sites associated with Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2), a group of proteins involved in regulating gene activity. A stable methylation pattern can make an epigenetic clock lose its age-tracking signal; it does not show that every biological process remains unchanged.

What “pausing the biological clock” means here

Does regeneration make an axolotl younger?
The preprint reports structure-specific rejuvenation events upon regeneration. In practical terms, a regenerated limb or other measured structure can acquire DNA-methylation features associated with a younger state. The result is local: it concerns the structure that regenerated and the molecular markers tested.
That is different from resetting the age of the animal’s brain, organs, immune system and other tissues. It is also different from proving that the regenerated structure will function indefinitely or that regeneration increases total lifespan.

Can an axolotl stop aging?
No—not in the broad sense implied by “stop aging.” Axolotls have finite lifespans. The available result says that one kind of molecular age marker becomes poor at distinguishing later ages, while some regenerated structures show younger methylation patterns. An animal can continue to age, become ill and eventually die even when a particular biomarker changes little.
This distinction is important because an epigenetic clock measures a selected molecular signal. Lifespan studies measure survival over time; they require evidence that animals live longer under defined conditions. The reported clock work does not provide that longevity test.

How certain is the finding?
The evidence comes from a bioRxiv preprint rather than a finished peer-reviewed publication. When BGR reported the story on September 25, 2024, it noted that the work had not yet been peer reviewed. Preprint results can be useful and important, but methods, analyses and interpretations have not received the same independent scrutiny as a published journal article.
The strongest supported conclusion is therefore narrow: axolotls appear to have unusually stable DNA-methylation patterns after early life, causing the first reported axolotl epigenetic clocks to become biphasic, and regeneration can be accompanied by younger methylation signatures in particular structures.

Why this matters for aging biology
It separates a biomarker from the aging process
If an epigenetic clock stops advancing while an animal continues living, the clock is not a complete measure of aging. A complete assessment compares molecular markers with health, function, disease and survival rather than treating one age estimate as the whole organism’s biological age.
It offers a way to study regeneration
Local methylation changes during regeneration may clarify how adult cells reset gene-regulation programs while rebuilding a structure. That could improve understanding of tissue repair, but it is not evidence that a human body can be reset in the same way.
It does not yet provide an anti-aging therapy
No intervention, dosage, clinical protocol or human result follows from this preprint. No reproducible mechanism, safety or actual improvement in health or lifespan for mammals follows from this axolotl molecular observation.
