Dogs can learn to respond to some recorded words, and a large collection of soundboard-button presses shows that certain buttons are used more often than others. Those findings are intriguing, but they do not establish that dogs speak human language or that owners can reliably translate a button sequence into a sentence. The key question is narrower: what do controlled tests show about dogs’ responses to words and buttons?
What the global dog-button project studied
The project investigates dogs trained to press soundboard buttons that play recorded words such as “outside,” “food,” or “play.” The buttons let researchers record observable choices, but a press alone does not reveal exactly what a dog intended.
A May 2025 BGR report described participating dogs in 47 countries. That figure reflects the project’s reported reach at the time, not a current census. In a February 2026 documentary, PBS NOVA described data from thousands of dogs in almost 50 countries and an analysis of more than ten million button presses. The documentary also cited project lead Federico Rossano saying that more than one million presses had come in over three months. These are dated descriptions of the project’s scale, not independent evidence of what every press meant. BGR’s 2025 report; PBS NOVA’s 2026 documentary.
What the word-response test found
PBS NOVA described a test in which dogs heard recorded words while people involved in the session were prevented from giving ordinary cues: experimenters wore headphones, and owners were blindfolded during parts of the test. In the documentary’s account, dogs responded appropriately to “play” and “outside,” but not to “food.” It also said 58 other dogs were tested in this account of the experiment; that number should not be mistaken for the project’s total sample.

This result concerns responses to recorded words. It is different from a dog independently choosing a button to communicate. A dog may learn that a sound predicts an activity or outcome without understanding the word in the same way a person does. The reported test is a reason to study word recognition and learned associations more carefully, not proof of human-like language.
What millions of button presses can—and cannot—show
PBS NOVA reported that “play,” “outside,” and “food” were among the most frequently pressed words in an analysis of more than ten million button presses. Uneven use is inconsistent with a simple picture in which every button is pressed equally at random. But button counts cannot, by themselves, distinguish intentional communication from learned requests, attention-seeking, repeated pressing, or physical convenience.

Layout matters: a frequently used button might be easier to reach or sit next to another popular button. Researchers need to account for which buttons a dog has and where they are positioned before treating differences in use as evidence of preference or meaning.
Why owner interpretations need caution
Some owners classify button presses as requests, sharing feelings, informing, or narrating. PBS NOVA explicitly described these categories as owners’ beliefs, not scientifically validated reports. They may be useful observations for generating questions, but they are not independent confirmation that a dog is expressing an emotion or telling a story.

For the same reason, claims that dogs use buttons to narrate their day, express complex feelings, or form sentences go beyond what the reported findings establish. Researchers must separate a dog’s behavior from the human interpretation placed on it.
How to judge a “talking dog” claim
Button studies can support claims of different strengths. Keeping those levels separate makes the evidence easier to assess:

- Learned association: A dog connects a sound or button with a familiar activity, reward, or response.
- Trained word response: A dog behaves differently after hearing a particular recorded word in a controlled test.
- Intentional button use: A dog selects a button in a way that reliably fits a situation, with human cues and easy-reach effects considered.
- Language: A much stronger claim that would require evidence of meaningful, flexible communication—not just pressing buttons or responding to trained words.
Useful questions include whether the test controls for owner speech, gaze, gestures, and experimenter knowledge; whether a behavior repeats across trials and dogs; whether button placement and reachability are accounted for; and whether the explanation rules out reinforcement or attention as alternatives. A large log can reveal patterns, but it does not answer all of these questions on its own.

PBS NOVA described Parker, a dog facing a locked food container in a novel task. After trying to get her owner’s attention, Parker pressed “help” and “look.” The owner had been instructed not to speak, point, gesture, or look at the dog. That is a compelling example worth investigating, especially because it occurred in a task involving a problem to solve.

One episode cannot establish how broadly dogs understand those words or whether they combine words with sentence-like meaning. As animal-cognition researcher Amalia Bastos put it in the documentary, “Knowing for certain what a dog means when it uses words, or thinks when it hears words, is much harder.” Rossano likewise emphasized the need for empirical tests: “We need to actually test things out empirically to find out what’s going on.”
Can you try communication buttons with your dog?
Recordable soundboard buttons are the tool being studied, and button training can be approached as an enrichment activity. A dog learning to press a button associated with a routine is not, by itself, evidence that the dog has acquired human language. Christina Hunger’s book Your Dog Can Talk: A Step-by-step Guide to Button Training is described by WBEZ as a training resource; it should be treated as guidance for an activity, not as scientific validation of language claims. If you use buttons, focus on what can be observed: which button the dog chooses, the situation, whether the choice repeats, and whether a person may have cued it. Treat the dog’s behavior as communication to investigate rather than assuming every press has a precise translation.
