Yes. Most dogs can have raw or cooked carrots as an occasional snack. Wash them, cut them into bite-size pieces, and serve cooked carrots plain. Keep portions small: carrots are a treat, not a replacement for your dog’s complete, balanced food.

How to prepare carrots for your dog

Wash and cut them small

Wash carrots thoroughly to remove dirt and residue; peeling is another option. Cut whole carrots and carrot sticks into bite-size pieces before offering them. Large pieces can pose a choking risk, especially for dogs that gulp their food, and smaller pieces do not eliminate that risk. The American Kennel Club’s carrot guidance and the VCA guide to feeding fruits and vegetables recommend washing produce.

Raw or cooked are both options

Dogs can generally eat carrots raw or cooked. If you cook them, serve them plain: avoid seasoning, sauces, or added ingredients. The AKC describes both preparations as acceptable, while the ASPCA’s food-sharing guidance advises against seasoning cooked vegetables.

How much carrot can a dog eat?

There is no universal carrot-specific piece count established by these veterinary and animal-care sources. The right amount depends on the individual dog, so ask your veterinarian how carrots fit your dog’s diet. As general guidance for snacks—not a carrot-specific calculation—the ASPCA says snacks should make up no more than five percent of a pet’s daily calories. Keep your dog’s complete, balanced regular food as the basis of its diet; vegetables are not a dietary requirement, according to the AKC guide to fruits and vegetables for dogs.

Introduce carrots gradually and watch for a reaction

When offering a new food, start with a small amount and introduce only one new produce item at a time. A change in food can upset a dog’s digestive system, and some pets have sensitivities. VCA notes that diarrhea or skin problems can be signs of a possible allergy. If you notice concerning symptoms, stop offering the carrot and contact your dog’s veterinarian. For a dog with a medical condition or a prescribed diet, ask the veterinarian before adding a snack.

What carrots do—and do not—replace

Carrots can be a simple snack, but they are not a substitute for complete dog food or individualized veterinary nutrition advice. The sources cited here do not establish a medical benefit, a dental-cleaning effect, or a specific serving size for carrots, so don’t rely on them for those purposes.
