Shedding replaces old or damaged hair; the amount and timing depend mainly on breed, coat type, season and indoor conditions. A coat-appropriate brushing routine is the most reliable way to manage it.
Why dogs shed
Hair grows, ages and is replaced. Breed and coat structure largely determine how much a dog sheds. Many double-coated dogs lose hair throughout the year and shed more heavily when their coat changes in spring and fall. Changes in daylight and temperature help trigger these seasonal periods. Dogs living indoors with fairly constant artificial light and temperatures may shed more evenly year-round. The American Kennel Club explains the normal shedding cycle and seasonal patterns.
Normal shedding should not create bald areas. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that hair loss without bald spots or obvious symmetric thinning is more consistent with ordinary coat replacement; visible bald patches or marked thinning can indicate alopecia or another disorder. See Merck’s overview of canine alopecia.
How to manage loose hair at home
1. Match the brush to the coat
| Coat or grooming need | Useful tool category | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Short, relatively smooth coat | Bristle brush or grooming glove | Brush over the coat regularly to collect surface hair. |
| Long or dense coat, especially a double coat | Slicker brush; an undercoat rake for loose undercoat | Work gently in the direction of hair growth. Use light pressure and stop if the dog objects or the skin reddens. |
| Tangles before brushing | Steel comb | Carefully loosen tangles first, then continue with the appropriate brush. |
There is no single best brush for every dog. Consider coat length and density, whether the dog has a double coat, the tool’s intended job and your dog’s comfort. Undercoat tools can irritate skin when used aggressively, so short, gentle passes are safer than forceful scraping. 2. Set a schedule that fits the shedding pattern
Light shedders may need brushing less often, while heavy shedders commonly need several sessions each week and sometimes daily brushing during a peak seasonal shed. These are starting points rather than universal rules. Increase frequency when you are finding loose hair, mats or undercoat coming out in clumps, and reduce pressure or pause if the skin becomes sensitive.
- Choose a calm time and let your dog see and sniff the tool.
- Brush in the direction the hair grows, using short sections.
- Check the skin as you go for redness, scabs, parasites, tenderness or unusual thinning.
- Remove collected hair from the brush and reward calm cooperation.
3. Use bathing as a support, not a cure
A bath with a shedding-control shampoo can help release and wash away loose hair. It has not been established as a way to prevent the biological shedding cycle. Rinse thoroughly and stop if the product causes irritation. If itching, inflammation or suspected allergy is present, bathing and brushing are only parts of a veterinary-directed plan, not a substitute for diagnosis.

When shedding may signal a health problem
Contact a veterinarian for sudden or unusually heavy hair loss, bald patches, a thinning coat, inflamed skin, repeated scratching or obvious discomfort. Parasites, bacterial or fungal infections, allergies and other diseases can all cause abnormal loss, and treatment depends on the underlying diagnosis. Grooming products cannot correct those causes. Merck lists common causes and warning signs of alopecia.
Itching and allergies
Allergic dogs may itch and develop inflamed skin; scratching can break hairs and produce hair loss, with secondary skin or ear problems. Management may include avoiding an identified allergen, controlling itch, bathing and coat hygiene, flea control, treatment of infections and prescription care. Shedding by itself does not prove that a dog has an allergy. Merck’s September 2024 allergy guidance describes these signs and treatment principles.

A practical shedding-control routine
- Identify whether your dog has a short coat, long coat or dense double coat.
- Keep the appropriate brush and, if needed, a comb available.
- Brush on a regular schedule; increase to frequent or daily sessions during a heavy shed if your dog remains comfortable.
- Use gentle, growth-direction strokes and inspect the skin at every session.
- Bathe only with a dog-appropriate product and rinse completely.
- Arrange veterinary assessment when hair loss is sudden, patchy, itchy, painful or associated with skin changes.
What “stop shedding” really means
For a healthy dog, “control” means capturing loose hair, preventing tangles and keeping the skin and coat in good condition. No brush or shampoo can turn off normal hair replacement. If the pattern changes or bald skin appears, the priority shifts from grooming to finding and treating the cause with a veterinarian.
