For a lush jungle aquarium, combine tall Vallisneria at the back, a space-appropriate Amazon sword as a broad-leaved focal point, grouped Cryptocoryne in the lower layers, and Anubias or Java fern attached to rock or driftwood. Choose plants by their mature size and your tank’s dimensions, then arrange them from tallest at the rear to shortest at the front.
How to build a jungle-style planting layout
A jungle look comes from layers and groups, not from filling every patch of substrate with a different species. Use tall plants at the back, medium-height plants through the center, and shorter plants in front. Leave enough space for each plant’s mature height and spread so the foreground does not disappear behind the background.
The Basic Aquarium Guide recommends choosing a few species and planting them in groups rather than scattering many kinds in small quantities. It also cautions against burying plant crowns. Read the Basic Aquarium Guide’s planting advice.
Background: Vallisneria
Vallisneria has long, ribbon-like leaves that create a tall screen behind shorter plants. Aqueon lists Italian Val among plants for medium aquariums and Jungle Val in its 55-gallon-and-larger category. Those categories are useful starting points, not a substitute for checking the variety’s mature size against your aquarium’s height and footprint. See Aqueon’s freshwater plant guide.

- Echinodorus bleheri from South America is undemanding and beautiful, and becomes 20-50 cm tall.
- A nutritious bottom promotes growth, but the plant needs pruning to prevent it depriving plants underneath of light.
- Echinodorus bleheri does well even in poorly illuminated aquariums, as it grows towards the light. It is a hardy and easy solitary plant for both beginners and the more experienced with quite large aquariums. It has been sold under the name "Paniculatus".
Feature plant: Amazon sword
An Amazon sword (Echinodorus) makes a broad-leaved focal point and is rooted in the substrate. It needs room as it grows; Aqueon places it in its large-aquarium list, and the Basic Aquarium Guide notes that it responds to pruning. Avoid positioning it where its mature leaves will crowd the entire front of the tank.
Lower layers: Cryptocoryne
Cryptocoryne, including C. wendtii, works well in grouped midground or foreground plantings. It is a substrate-rooted plant; Aqueon lists C. wendtii for foreground-to-midground placement. The Basic Aquarium Guide notes that Cryptocoryne may take time to adapt, so do not judge its long-term fit immediately after planting.

Hardscape: Anubias and Java fern
Anubias and Java fern add foliage without occupying the same kind of substrate space as rooted feature plants. Attach them to rock or driftwood rather than treating them as conventional plants to bury. Aqueon lists Java fern for attachment to driftwood or rock; the Basic Aquarium Guide suggests Anubias barteri (nana) for foreground placement and driftwood.
Small detail: Java moss
Java moss can soften a small area of rock or driftwood or provide a low-growing detail. Aqueon lists it as suitable anywhere in the tank when secured to hardscape.

Compare plants by size, placement, and planting method
| Plant | Best role in the layout | Planting method and fit |
|---|---|---|
| Vallisneria / Jungle Val | Tall background screen | Root in substrate. Check mature height; Aqueon lists Italian Val for medium aquariums and Jungle Val for 55+ gallons. |
| Amazon sword / Echinodorus | Broad-leaved focal plant | Root in substrate and allow room to grow. Aqueon lists it for large aquariums; pruning may be needed. |
| Cryptocoryne, such as C. wendtii | Grouped foreground or midground | Root in substrate. Allow time for it to adapt after planting. |
| Anubias | Foreground or hardscape accent | Attach to rock or driftwood; Anubias barteri (nana) is one suggested option. |
| Java fern | Midground hardscape plant | Secure to rock or driftwood rather than burying it as a conventional rooted plant. |
| Java moss | Small hardscape detail | Secure to rock or driftwood; Aqueon lists it as usable anywhere in the tank. |
Choose plants that suit your aquarium
Before buying, compare each plant’s mature height and spread with the aquarium’s dimensions. Also consider leaf shape, where it will sit in the layout, whether it attaches to hardscape or roots in substrate, and how much suitable substrate you have. A tall ribbon-leaved Vallisneria and a broad Amazon sword create different kinds of coverage; Cryptocoryne fills lower groups, while Anubias and Java fern use hardscape.
Lighting and water conditions affect suitability, so a plant’s placement label alone does not guarantee it will thrive in a particular aquarium. Aqueon describes low-light plants as slow-growing and undemanding for low-tech setups, and gives 20–30 PAR under that category. Treat that figure as Aqueon’s care-category guidance, not a universal requirement for every plant listed here.

Sizes may vary to provide a mix of lush greens, delicate stems, and bold textures. These are just some of the popular plants we carry, though many more could be included in your bundle! 🙂
- Weather Advisory: Live Plants Shipping Notice Please note that these are live plants, and extreme weather conditions can cause damage during transit. If your region is experiencing freezing temperatures (below 32°F) or extreme heat (above 90°F), we recommend refraining from placing an order until conditions improve.
Planting checklist
- Plan the layers. Mark the rear, middle, and front zones before planting; reserve the rear for tall growth and keep shorter groupings visible.
- Check mature size. Confirm that each plant has room in the aquarium, especially tall Vallisneria and broad Amazon swords.
- Group a few species. Use repeated clusters for a cohesive look instead of scattering many species in single small clumps.
- Use the right attachment method. Root Vallisneria, Amazon sword, and Cryptocoryne in substrate; secure Anubias, Java fern, and Java moss to rock or driftwood.
- Keep crowns uncovered. Do not bury plant crowns when setting rooted plants into the substrate.
Root tablets are an optional care item for substrate-rooted plants: Aqueon lists them alongside Cryptocoryne, Vallisneria, and Amazon sword. They are not a required purchase based on the planting guidance here.
