The term does not always mean the fish lives only in fresh water: some species move between rivers and the ocean, while ecological definitions can also include certain brackish-water species and fish that depend on fresh water for one life stage.
What does “freshwater fish” mean?
In everyday use, “freshwater fish” usually means a fish that lives in inland, non-marine waters, including rivers and lakes. Ecologists may use a broader definition. The IUCN/SSC Freshwater Fish Specialist Group includes species that live in fresh or brackish water, as well as species that need fresh water during a critical part of their life cycle. That scope does not make every fish found in brackish water a freshwater fish; classification depends on how a species uses those waters.
The term describes an ecological association, not a taxonomic rank or a guarantee that a fish spends its whole life in fresh water.
Can a freshwater fish also live in the ocean?
Yes. Some species normally move between fresh water and salt water as part of their life cycle. NOAA describes salmon and some sturgeon that begin life in fresh water, grow in the ocean, and return to fresh water to spawn. Florida’s wildlife agency likewise notes that some fish tolerate a broad range of salinities and that fish moving between fresh and salt water may do so to mature or reproduce.

So it is more useful to ask which waters a fish uses, and at which life stages, than to assume every species fits a strict freshwater-or-saltwater divide. The specialist group’s broader definition does not necessarily include incidental visitors; it focuses on species with a meaningful connection to fresh or brackish water.
Examples of freshwater fish
Common examples associated with rivers include bass, perch, bluegill, and catfish, as listed by NOAA. Salmon and some sturgeon illustrate why the everyday label can need qualification: they use both freshwater and marine habitats during their life cycles.
Does “freshwater” tell you what habitat a fish needs?
No. “Freshwater” describes salinity, but it does not tell you whether a particular waterway is suitable for a particular fish. Fisheries and Oceans Canada identifies other habitat factors that can vary by species and life stage, including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, depth, flow, bottom substrate, vegetation, and connections to other habitats. A fish’s freshwater classification alone is not a complete description of its habitat needs.

The IUCN/SSC Freshwater Fish Specialist Group’s page reports 18,898 recognized freshwater fishes and says they represent 51% of all known fish species. The page also says they account for one quarter of known vertebrates. The page’s publication year is not stated, so these are the organization’s displayed figures, not dated trend data.
