Anglerfish do not have one standard size because the name covers many species. NOAA Ocean Today says most are under 1 foot long, while some reach 3.3 feet (1 meter). Monterey Bay Aquarium gives up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) for deep-sea anglerfish as a broad group. Those are different source scopes and maximum estimates—not the usual size of an individual fish.
Why anglerfish sizes vary so much
“Anglerfish” is a broad group rather than a single species. NOAA Ocean Today and Monterey Bay Aquarium each describe more than 200 species of deep-sea anglerfish, with substantial variation in body shape and size. Smithsonian Ocean also notes that anglerfish and close relatives occupy both deep-sea and shallower habitats, so a size figure must be tied to a particular species or group.
A maximum for a broad category should not be treated as the expected size of every anglerfish. “Most,” “some,” and “up to” describe different parts of the size range.

| Anglerfish generally | Most are less than 1 foot long | A typicality statement, not a maximum | NOAA Ocean Today |
| Anglerfish generally | Some reach 3.3 feet (1 meter) | An upper size cited for some individuals | NOAA Ocean Today |
| Deep-sea anglerfish as a broad group | Up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) | A group-level maximum reported by the aquarium | Monterey Bay Aquarium |
| Fanfin anglerfish | Up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) | Maximum for this named species | Monterey Bay Aquarium |
| Black seadevil anglerfish | Up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) | Maximum for this named species | Monterey Bay Aquarium |
How large are the famous deep-sea examples?
Fanfin anglerfish
Monterey Bay Aquarium lists the fanfin anglerfish at up to 8 inches (20 centimeters). That is considerably smaller than the broad four-foot upper figure sometimes given for deep-sea anglerfish.

Black seadevil anglerfish
The same aquarium lists the black seadevil at up to 8 inches (20 centimeters). This familiar deep-sea form is therefore a useful reminder that a well-known anglerfish can be small even though the larger group includes species with much greater reported maximum lengths.
Why different authorities report different maximums
NOAA’s general summary says some anglerfish can reach 3.3 feet (1 meter), whereas Monterey Bay Aquarium gives up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) for deep-sea anglerfish. Neither number should be presented as a universal record for every anglerfish species. The difference can reflect the groups included and the way each institution summarizes a diverse set of species.

- Keep feet, meters, inches, and centimeters attached to the same qualification as the original source.
Are anglerfish really as big as they look?
Images and videos usually show one particular species, so appearance cannot establish the size of the whole group. A deep-sea anglerfish pictured with an enormous mouth or long fishing lure may still be only several inches long; both the fanfin and black seadevil examples are listed at no more than 8 inches (20 centimeters). Conversely, the group-level summaries allow for substantially larger species.
The most accurate short answer is therefore: many anglerfish are under a foot long, some reported examples reach about 1 meter, and Monterey Bay Aquarium gives a 4-foot (1.2-meter) upper size for deep-sea anglerfish as a broad category.
