What Kinds of Fish Live in Lake Ecosystems?

Lakes may hold warmwater, coolwater and coldwater fish, but local species depend on climate, depth, oxygen and habitat.

Lakes can support warmwater fish such as sunfishes, temperate basses and catfishes; coolwater fish such as perches and pikes; and coldwater fish such as trout and salmon. These are broad ecological groupings, not a checklist for every lake. The species in a particular lake depend on its location, depth, seasonal temperatures, oxygen and available habitats.

Which kinds of fish are common in lakes?

Ecologists often group lake fish by the water temperatures they generally tolerate or prefer. The categories are useful for understanding communities, but they are not rigid divisions: a lake may contain several thermal habitats, and fish can move between them as conditions change.

Warmwater fish

Sunfishes, temperate basses and catfishes are typical of warmwater communities. A 2009 U.S. Geological Survey chapter focuses on fish that prefer temperatures above 15°C, but that figure describes the chapter’s focus, not a universal definition of a warmwater fish community. The authors note that no specific criteria define one.

Coolwater fish

Perches and pikes are common examples of fish associated with coolwater communities. Their presence and distribution still depend on the particular lake’s temperatures and habitats.

Coldwater fish

Trout and salmon are characteristic of coldwater communities. In large lakes, coldwater fish may use deep, cool water, but temperature alone does not determine where they can live; oxygen levels and seasonal changes matter too.

Where do fish live within a lake?

Fish use different parts of a lake according to habitat, food and changing water conditions. The shallow littoral zone, near shore, often has varied habitat and supports a broader mix of fish species. Deeper open water, or the pelagic zone, generally supports fewer species.

In a stratified lake, a warm upper layer called the epilimnion may sit above a colder deep layer called the hypolimnion, with a thermocline between them. Fish with different thermal needs may concentrate at different depths. In some lakes, however, low oxygen beneath the thermocline can push coldwater fish into shallower, warmer water than they would otherwise use.

Seasonal mixing, temperature, light, turbidity and oxygen all affect the depths fish occupy. Inlets and outlets may also attract fish because they can bring prey, groundwater or distinct water temperatures.

How fish fit into a lake food web

Lake communities include both smaller prey fish, often called forage fish, and predators that eat fish. The balance varies by lake; a relationship documented in one place should not be assumed elsewhere.

For example, a U.S. Geological Survey report on Lake Ontario’s offshore pelagic community describes alewife as a major prey fish and salmon and trout among its predators. That report covers indicators from 2008–2013, so it provides a named example and ecological context rather than a current census of the lake.

Why one lake has different fish from another

A lake’s fish community reflects its setting and physical conditions. Climate and lake size and depth influence temperature and stratification; watershed runoff can carry nutrients and sediment into the water; and aquatic plants can provide refuge. Water chemistry, oxygen and available habitat also shape which species can persist.

Excess nutrient enrichment can encourage algal growth and oxygen depletion. The U.S. Geological Survey says dissolved oxygen below 3 mg/L can be harmful or lethal to aquatic life, and prolonged low oxygen can contribute to fish kills. This is a general warning about aquatic life, not a universal cutoff for every fish species.

Lake Ontario shows why local species lists matter

Lake Ontario illustrates how native and introduced fish can occur in the same lake. In its offshore community, the USGS report identifies native Atlantic salmon, cisco, emerald shiner and threespine stickleback. It also lists alewife and rainbow smelt as unintentionally introduced, and Chinook salmon, coho salmon, rainbow trout and brown trout as intentionally introduced. These are examples from Lake Ontario, not a list of fish found in lakes generally.

How to find out which fish live in a particular lake

Start with the lake’s name and region, then check the relevant local fish and wildlife authority for a species list. A broad label such as “lake fish” cannot establish whether a specific species occurs in that lake: communities vary with geography, habitat and water conditions.
