Yes. Sharks have scales called placoid scales or dermal denticles: tiny, tooth-like structures embedded in their skin. They are not the broad, overlapping scales many people picture on fish. Their shape and texture vary among shark species and across different parts of the body.
What are shark scales called?
Shark scales are placoid scales, also known as dermal denticles. The name reflects their tooth-like structure: these small units sit in the skin and can have ridges or other shapes. NOAA Fisheries describes them as flat and diamond-shaped, while Smithsonian Ocean describes V-shaped denticles. Those descriptions need not conflict; the details can differ by species and body region, as a 2018 study abstract also notes.
Many bony fishes have scales that overlap like shingles. Shark denticles are a different, specialized kind of skin structure, so “scales” is accurate even though they do not look or behave like that familiar pattern.
Why does shark skin feel smooth one way and rough the other?
The denticles point toward the tail. As a result, shark skin generally feels smoother when stroked from head to tail and rougher when rubbed from tail to head. Smithsonian Ocean compares the reverse-direction texture to sandpaper, but the sensation is not identical for every shark: NOAA notes that nurse shark skin is fairly smooth compared with that of most sharks.

What do dermal denticles do?
They help water move past the shark
Denticles help reduce friction, or drag, as water flows over the skin. NOAA describes the denticles of shortfin makos as capable of being raised, but that is a species-specific detail, not a feature to assume for all sharks.
They protect the skin
Denticles also provide a protective surface. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute reports that they help guard against abrasion from hard substrates and against ectoparasite attachment.
