What Is the Function of Scales on a Fish?

Fish scales mainly protect the skin and body from injury. Their shapes range from overlapping cycloid and ctenoid scales to shark dermal denticles and hard ganoid scales, while some fish have no ordinary scales. Growth rings can help estimate age, but only with species-specific validation.

Fish scales mainly protect the skin and body from physical damage. In many bony fish, overlapping scales form a flexible, shingle-like covering that moves as the fish bends and swims. Scale structure varies greatly among fish, and some fish have no ordinary scales at all.

How scales protect a fish

Scales create an external layer between a fish’s delicate skin and hazards such as contact with rocks, plants, other animals and handling. The scale covering can reduce direct abrasion and minor impact while leaving the body flexible enough to move.

Protection is not identical in every species. Some scales are thin and overlapping; others are thick, hard or modified into plates. Coverage may also be incomplete or concentrated on particular parts of the body.

Why overlapping scales do not stop a fish from bending

Many familiar bony fish have cycloid or ctenoid scales arranged partly over one another, like roof shingles. Each scale can shift slightly against its neighbors, so the fish retains flexibility while the skin remains covered.

This arrangement supports normal body movements such as bending during swimming. It should not be interpreted as proof that scales universally make fish swim faster or reduce drag; any flow effect depends on the species and the detailed surface structure.

Fish scales are not all the same

Scale or covering Structure and edge Where it occurs What the structure means
Placoid scales (dermal denticles) Small tooth-like structures Sharks and rays A distinctive protective skin covering, unlike the overlapping scales of most bony fish
Ganoid scales Hard scales that generally overlap little Some ancient lineages and related ray-finned fish A more rigid form of external protection
Cycloid scales Smoother margins Many bony fish Can overlap while allowing the body to flex
Ctenoid scales Comb-like projections along the edge Many bony fish Comb-edged scales that still form a flexible covering
Modified plates or regional coverings Thickened, embedded or otherwise altered structures Species-specific body regions and lineages Protection and body covering are adapted to the fish’s form and lifestyle

These categories describe broad structural patterns, not a ranking from “best” to “worst.” A scale type can be useful in one body shape or habitat and different in another. Scale type can even differ between the two sides of some flatfish, and in some species it varies with sex.

Do all fish have scales?

No. The word “fish scales” covers several different structures, and some fish lack ordinary body scales. Catfish are a familiar example of a lineage without the typical overlapping scales seen on perch or many other bony fish. Other fish may have plates, embedded scales or only partial coverage.

Shark and ray dermal denticles are also not the same thing as the thin, overlapping scales most people picture. They are tooth-like skin structures with a different design and evolutionary history.

Can scales help determine a fish’s age?

Sometimes. As certain scales grow, ridges can form concentric patterns that biologists read as growth marks. With a validated method for the species, these patterns can support an age estimate.

A ring on a scale is not automatically a guaranteed calendar-year marker. NOAA Fisheries notes several problems that can make scale readings inaccurate:

  • Scales can erode or be lost.
  • Replacement scales can regenerate and appear younger than the original.
  • Closely spaced rings near the edge can be difficult to distinguish.
  • In some groundfish, crowded edge rings can cause readers to underestimate age.

For that reason, fisheries scientists evaluate the method for each species and may use otoliths or another structure when it gives a more dependable result. The American Fisheries Society and museum and university references likewise treat scale ageing as a technique requiring interpretation, not a universal rule.

Are scales responsible for a fish’s slippery surface?

Not by themselves. Fish skin is commonly coated with epidermal mucus. The University of Hawai‘i’s educational material describes this mucus as helping the fish slide through water and carrying away microscopic organisms and irritants. Scales are part of the body surface, but attributing the entire slippery sensation to scales is inaccurate.

What scales do for a pet fish

For an aquarium fish, intact scales are part of the normal protective skin barrier. Scraping against décor, rough nets, aggressive tank mates or poor handling can damage that covering and the skin beneath it. Because scale shape and coverage differ by species—and some fish have no ordinary scales—care should be based on the particular fish rather than on a one-size-fits-all assumption.
