How Ice Helps Lakes and Fish Survive Winter

Lake ice insulates water from winter air, but it does not warm the lake. Fish responses and under-ice conditions vary with species, depth, light, and oxygen.

Lake ice helps fish survive winter by insulating the water below and slowing heat loss to the air. It does not warm the lake: water beneath the ice can still be cold, and fish survival depends on species, depth, oxygen, light, and other local conditions.

How does lake ice help fish survive?

Ice forms a surface lid that slows the lake’s exchange of heat with cold air. NOAA National Ocean Service explains that “The layer of ice that forms on top of a lake, pond, river, or stream provides some insulation that helps the waterbody retain its heat.” That insulation helps water below remain liquid and less exposed to abrupt air-temperature swings; it does not keep the entire lake warm.

In very cold freshwater, water’s density behavior helps explain why deeper water can be warmer than the near-freezing water close to the surface. The actual temperature profile varies with the lake and its conditions, so ice is not a guarantee of one temperature or a suitable refuge everywhere.

What do fish do under the ice?

Fish are cold-blooded, so cold water generally slows their metabolism and activity. Many gather in deeper pools near the bottom. Some species burrow into soft sediment and become dormant; many others enter what NOAA calls a “winter rest.” In NOAA’s words, “In this resting state, fishes’ hearts slow down, their needs for food and oxygen decrease, and they move about very little.” Strategies differ among species, and fish do not all become dormant or behave the same way.

How do ice and snow change light and oxygen?

Light and winter production

Ice and snow alter how much light enters a lake, as well as its depth and spectral distribution. Less light can limit photosynthesis, but it does not mean there is no life or production beneath the ice. A 2023 USGS-indexed study of six Minnesota inland lakes found that snow cover changed underwater light intensity and spectral signature; estimated productivity differed among lakes and cover conditions, with substantial under-ice productivity in some observations. Those findings describe the studied lakes, not a universal rate for all lakes.

Oxygen availability

Cold water can hold more dissolved oxygen than warm water, but oxygen is also consumed by organisms and sediment processes and replenished through atmospheric exchange, photosynthesis, and mixing. Stable ice restricts exchange with the atmosphere. In some lakes, oxygen can decline enough to reduce suitable overwintering habitat; depth, vegetation, organic matter, inflows, and mixing all influence the outcome.

A 2025 USGS-indexed study of 12 Upper Mississippi backwater lakes reports that sediment oxygen demand contributes to winter dissolved-oxygen depletion under ice. That finding is specific to the studied backwaters: it does not mean every frozen lake becomes oxygen-poor.

Does ice help every fish or lake?

No. Ice can shape thermal structure, water movement, regional weather, and spring plankton blooms, as NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) describes. More winter ice can delay later warming because incoming heat must first melt the ice, but weather and heat stored in the lake also affect seasonal temperatures. The effects on fish and food webs connect across the seasons; more ice is not automatically better for every species.

Tetra Pond De-Icer, Winter Survival Solution for Fish
  • POND DE-ICER: Keeps an area of your pond free from ice.
  • WINTER SURVIVAL SOLUTION: Allows toxic gases from decaying matter to escape from under ice during the winter.
  • EFFECTIVE: Works in temperatures as low as -20 degrees.
  • 300-WATTS: Features a 15 foot power cord and thermostatically controlled shutoff.
  • NATURAL FINISH: Stone finish complement’s your pond’s surroundings.

Species’ temperature preferences matter. Under warmer lake conditions, cooler-water fish may seek cooler depths, while changes in mixing and oxygen can affect habitat and food availability. These are conditional effects, not a single outcome that applies to every lake or fish.

How can ice protect fish eggs?

In the Great Lakes, lake whitefish spawn in shallow nearshore areas and lay eggs on the bottom. NOAA Climate.gov reports that ice can shield these eggs from turbulent waves generated by fall and winter storms. NOAA fishery biologist Steve Pothoven explains that without ice protection, high waves can kill eggs before they hatch.

This is a specific example, not proof that ice benefits all eggs or fish. Warm winters and rapid spring warming may also shift hatching timing in relation to plankton availability, one link between winter conditions and the food young fish encounter.

  • Depth and mixing: these affect where fish can find suitable temperatures and how water and oxygen are distributed.
  • Snow cover and ice clarity: these change how much and what kind of light reaches underwater plants and other producers.
  • Oxygen demand and replenishment: sediment and organisms consume oxygen, while exchange, photosynthesis, inflows, and mixing can replenish or redistribute it.
  • Species and overwintering habitat: temperature preferences and winter behaviors vary among fish.
  • Egg location and wave exposure: shallow eggs may be exposed to storm disturbance, as in the Great Lakes whitefish example.

These factors help explain why two ice-covered lakes can offer very different conditions. They do not provide a standardized ranking of lakes or a universal prediction of fish survival.

What does winter lake ice mean for people and ecosystems?

A 2024 review summary in the USGS Publications Warehouse says that more than half a billion people live near lakes that freeze over in winter. The same summary reports that the rate of lake ice-cover loss accelerated over the preceding 25 years, attributing the trend to the reviewed research rather than to a measurement for every individual lake. Changes in ice can matter beyond fish because lake ice is linked to seasonal heat, water movement, and biological timing.
