How Large Is the Fish Population in a Coral Reef?

There is no single fish count for a coral reef. Scientists estimate abundance from sampled areas, accounting for habitat, depth, survey method and the fish included.

There is no single fish-population number for “a coral reef.” A reef’s total depends on its mapped area, habitats and depths, the fish included, and how and when scientists survey it. Researchers usually report fish density in a sampled area, alongside measures such as species richness or biomass—not a universal count for an entire reef.

Why a coral reef has no single fish count

“A coral reef” could mean a small patch or a large reef system, and fish are not spread evenly across either one. Different reef zones, depths and habitat types can hold different fish assemblages. A total population estimate therefore needs a defined reef boundary and representative sampling across its habitats; a count from one location cannot stand in for the whole reef.

The available NOAA monitoring methods and regional reports do not establish a global total of reef fish. They describe ways to survey fish and report results for specified locations and sampling designs.

What scientists mean by fish population

Several commonly reported measures answer different questions. A fish count is the number recorded in a survey area. Density expresses a count relative to an area. Species richness is the number of species recorded, while biomass is the combined mass of fish per unit area. NOAA monitoring distinguishes numeric density, species richness and fish mass per unit area; none is interchangeable with a total population for an entire reef.

How reef-fish surveys estimate abundance

NOAA’s Pacific stationary point count protocol has observers count fish within adjacent cylinders approximately 15 meters in diameter. They record species, numbers and estimated fish lengths. Counts can be converted to density for the sampled area; length estimates can also support biomass calculations using length-to-weight relationships. The protocol and monitoring methods are described by the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program.

For a reef-wide estimate, scientists need more than a few local counts. They define the reef area and habitat groups, sample representative locations consistently, and combine the observations according to the sampling design. NOAA describes stratified random designs that account for factors such as island, reef zone and depth. The resulting estimate applies to the fish assemblage and habitats covered by that survey, not necessarily to every fish in the reef: hidden or nocturnal fish, or fish outside the sampled depths and habitats, may not be represented.

For example, NOAA’s Pacific Remote Island Areas dataset concerns diurnally active fish in shallow-water hard-bottom habitats under 30 meters. Its coverage and design are specific to that dataset, not a census of all reef fish. NOAA’s National Coral Reef Monitoring Program maintains observations across U.S. Atlantic, Pacific, Caribbean and Gulf coral reef areas, but broad U.S. monitoring is not one worldwide fish count. See the dataset metadata and the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program for their respective scope.

What a reported density figure tells you

A NOAA Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary annual report illustrates the units without providing a typical value for reefs generally: its survey cylinder covers 176.7 m², and fish density is expressed as individuals per 100 m². The denominator standardizes a local count so it can be understood relative to a fixed area; it is not the total number of fish on the sanctuary’s reef, much less a worldwide average. The example is in the 2024 annual report.

How to compare two reef-fish estimates

Two reported figures are meaningfully comparable only when their scope and methods are sufficiently alike. Check the following before interpreting a difference:

  • Area: Is each figure a count from a sample, a density, or an estimate for a defined reef boundary?
  • Habitat and depth: Which reef zones, depths and habitat types were surveyed?
  • Fish included: Were the same species or fish groups counted, and were surveys limited to fish active during daylight?
  • Timing and effort: When were observations made, and how many locations or survey units were sampled?
  • Method and metric: Were the same protocol and reporting unit used, and does the figure mean count, density, species richness or biomass?

Differences in these factors can make two numbers unlike measures rather than evidence that one reef supports more fish than another.
