Keep a betta aquarium at about 78–80°F (25.5–26.5°C), within the commonly recommended 76–81°F (24.4–27.2°C) range. The most important goal is warm, steady water measured with an aquarium thermometer—not chasing one supposedly perfect number.
The best temperature range for a betta
Veterinary care guidance from PetMD (updated April 27, 2026) and the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine (2019) places betta water at 76–81°F. A practical target near the middle-to-warm end is 78–80°F.
PetMD emphasizes that stability matters more than the exact reading and notes that many bettas do best toward the warmer end of the range. Avoid rapid swings caused by cold rooms, direct sunlight, water changes, or an incorrectly adjusted heater.
How published recommendations differ
These figures are husbandry guidance, not the result of a controlled trial proving one uniquely optimal temperature. The ranges differ because organizations present slightly different care margins.

- ★10 Watt Aquarium Heater: Temperature range is 59-93°F, for small glass or acrylic aquariums up 1 to 5 gallons, can be used for both fresh and marine water, ideal for fish tanks and turtle tanks. Please choose the right wattage aquarium heater according to our size chart
- ★Made with Premium Quartz: The aquarium heater is made of 2mm thickened quartz glass. This fish tank heater is resistant to explosion and corrosion, and protect fish and other livestocks from punching and scalding
- ★Dry Run / Overheating Protection: When the water temperature exceeds 95°F or when the warer level is lower than the minimum water level, the heater will stop heating, and the conrtoller will display an error code. Error code: HH-high temp; E1-out off water. Multiple protection, you are free from “cooking fish”!

|---|---|---|---|
| PetMD | 76–81°F | Many bettas prefer the warmer end; stability is more important than an exact value | Care sheet updated April 27, 2026 |
| University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine | 76–81°F | Measure the aquarium water and use an in-tank heater in most homes | Veterinary guidance, 2019 |
| Anabantoid Association of Great Britain | About 24–28°C (75–82.4°F) | Keep temperatures warm with minimal fluctuations; use thermostatic regulation | Guidelines compiled with Dr Peter Burgess, 2014 |
| Aqueon | 76–85°F | Cooler conditions can leave bettas inactive and more susceptible to disease | Publication date not stated on the page accessed September 30, 2026 |
For a general home-aquarium recommendation, the narrower 76–81°F veterinary range is the clearest choice. The broader AAGB and Aqueon ranges should not be silently treated as proof that every temperature up to 85°F is equally suitable.
Do betta fish need a heater?
Most homes do. Room temperature can fall below the betta’s preferred range, and room air does not reliably indicate the temperature of the water. The University of Illinois specifically says most households will need an in-tank heater. PetMD recommends a heater to prevent stressful fluctuations, while the AAGB calls for a thermostatically regulated heater.

Choose equipment by function, not a universal wattage rule
- Thermometer: Use it to measure the water in the aquarium. Check the reading in the tank rather than estimating from the room or touching the glass.
- Thermostatically controlled heater: Set it within the manufacturer’s instructions and verify the resulting water temperature with the thermometer.
- Heater size: PetMD mentions an approximate 3–5 watts-per-gallon rule, but that is not universal. Tank volume, room temperature, lid, water movement, and the specific heater all affect sizing. Match the product to the aquarium and its instructions.
How to check and maintain the temperature
- Place an aquarium thermometer where it measures representative tank water, following the thermometer manufacturer’s placement guidance.
- Read the temperature regularly, including after setting up the heater and after water changes.
- Adjust the heater gradually if the water is outside the target range; do not make abrupt changes.
- Keep the aquarium away from drafts, heating or cooling vents, and strong direct sunlight, which can cause unwanted fluctuations.
- When replacing water, prepare it so its temperature is close to the aquarium’s temperature before adding it.
- Continue monitoring after any heater adjustment. A heater’s dial is a setting, not confirmation of the actual water temperature.
Signs the water may be too cold
The AAGB cautions that bettas kept too cold may become sluggish, eat poorly, and be more prone to disease. These signs are general husbandry warnings, not a diagnosis: similar symptoms can result from poor water quality or illness.
What to do if your betta seems unwell
- Check the actual aquarium temperature with a thermometer.
- Check water quality using appropriate aquarium tests and correct any problems safely.
- Look for heater failure, an unplugged heater, or sudden temperature changes.
- If the fish remains unwell, worsens, or shows additional symptoms, seek advice from an experienced fish-care professional or an aquatic veterinarian.
Is 78°F better than 80°F?
Neither number is established as uniquely optimal by the care guidance reviewed. Both sit inside the 76–81°F veterinary range. A stable aquarium at 78°F is generally preferable to one that repeatedly swings between warmer and colder readings. Set a sensible point around 78–80°F, then prioritize consistency and verify it with a thermometer.
