They are marine fish that spend much of their lives in nearshore waters and estuaries, so “saltwater fish” is accurate, but “open-ocean-only fish” is not. Bays, marshes, inlets and other brackish coastal habitats are important to them too.
Which fish does “redfish” mean?
In this article, redfish means red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), also called channel bass. The common name is ambiguous: other species, including Acadian redfish, are called redfish in different regions. Acadian redfish is not the same species as Gulf and Atlantic red drum.
North Carolina’s wildlife agency calls the red drum its “state saltwater fish,” reflecting its marine classification and importance to coastal anglers.
Where do red drum live?
Red drum occur along the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to Key West and along Florida’s Gulf coast. Florida wildlife officials report that most of the species’ life cycle takes place in nearshore waters and estuaries. NOAA also identifies Gulf estuaries and specified coastal waters as essential fish habitat.

Why estuaries matter
An estuary mixes seawater with freshwater, creating salinity that changes with tides, rainfall and river flow. Red drum can use these brackish areas even though they are fundamentally coastal marine fish. This is why anglers may find them around bays, tidal creeks, marsh edges and inlets rather than only beyond the surf.
Habitat changes with age
Juveniles are most abundant in estuarine waters and inlets. Older fish use deeper water; the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission says fish older than age four inhabit deeper waters. Adults also move seasonally, generally shifting offshore or south in winter and inshore or north in spring.

What do redfish eat?
Red drum eat small crabs and shrimp as well as small fish. Their prey explains why natural-looking shrimp or small-crab imitations are common lure patterns for coastal anglers. That is a prey-based choice, not proof that one lure is universally most effective.
How long do red drum live?
A red drum can live for more than 40 years, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Individual movements, habitat use and vulnerability to fishing change over that long life span, so a juvenile in a marsh and an older adult in deeper water may occupy very different environments.

Are redfish the same everywhere along the coast?
The species is the same across its broad Atlantic and Gulf range, but local conditions and management are not. Salinity, depth, seasonal movements and available prey differ among estuaries and coastal regions. “Saltwater” describes the species’ marine identity; it does not mean every red drum is always in water with the same salt concentration.
What do the latest stock assessments say?
Stock status must be stated by region and date. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s summary of its 2024 benchmark assessment reported that the northern stock, from New Jersey through North Carolina, was not overfished and was not experiencing overfishing. The southern stock, from South Carolina through Florida’s east coast, was reported as overfished and experiencing overfishing. An October 2025 management update summarized those findings. These results are not a single coastwide verdict.

What rules apply if you fish for red drum?
Recreational seasons, minimum and maximum sizes, slot limits, and daily bag limits vary by state and, in some cases, by management region. Florida’s rules page, for example, lists regulations by region; those limits should not be applied to another state or assumed to remain unchanged.
- Identify the state, territory or federal waters where you will fish.
- Check that jurisdiction’s current red drum regulations immediately before the trip.
- Read the specific management-region entry, including season dates, size or slot limits, bag limits and gear restrictions.
- Confirm whether the rule applies to recreational fishing, charter fishing or another license category.
Regulations can change as assessments and management decisions are updated, so an old chart or a rule remembered from a previous season may be wrong.
