Yes. The northern pike (Esox lucius) is a freshwater fish, commonly found in vegetated lakes, slow-moving streams, rivers, backwaters and reservoirs. It can tolerate low-salinity water, but that does not make it a marine fish.
What waters do northern pike live in?
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describes northern pike as a cool-water species found in freshwater. Typical habitat includes clear lakes with aquatic vegetation, quiet pools, and backwaters of small and large creeks and rivers; pike also occur in reservoirs. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife highlights shallow, vegetated lake margins, sluggish streams and river backwaters.
Habitat changes with the fish’s size: smaller pike tend to stay among aquatic plants, while larger ones are often found near vegetation edges in deeper water. The federal species profile says pike may occur at depths up to 100 feet; this is a reported maximum, not a description of their usual habitat. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service species profile; California Department of Fish and Wildlife profile.
Does brackish-water tolerance change its classification?
No. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife reports that northern pike can tolerate low-salinity, or brackish, water, as well as a range of temperatures and low oxygen. That tolerance is a qualification to its habitat range: the species is still classified as a freshwater fish and is typically associated with freshwater environments.

Where are northern pike native?
Northern pike range across Arctic portions of North America, Europe and Asia. In North America, their range extends from Alaska through Canada into the upper Midwest. Pike have also been introduced or transplanted beyond their native range, so finding pike in a particular lake or river does not by itself show that they are native there. For a specific location, consult local fisheries information and the USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species records, which track nonnative occurrences.
How to recognize a northern pike
Northern pike have a long, streamlined body, a flattened snout shaped somewhat like a duck’s bill, and a large mouth lined with sharp teeth. Their upper coloring is dark green to gray, with pale oval spots along the body. The California agency reports that many measure 16 to 24 inches; that is a general observation, not a size limit or a universal adult measurement.

What do pike eat?
Northern pike are carnivorous ambush predators. They use underwater vegetation and other cover to approach prey, eating primarily fish, invertebrates and amphibians. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service also notes that they may take snakes, small mammals such as mice and voles, and waterfowl.

Spawning time depends on location. In the Great Lakes, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says pike tend to spawn in April or May, after winter ice leaves. Adults move into shallow streams or the edges of flooded marshes. Females scatter eggs over vegetation, where the sticky eggs adhere to submerged plants.
The agency’s 2023 fact sheet gives an upper figure of up to 75,000 eggs per female; it is not a typical clutch size. Depending on water temperature, eggs hatch in 10 to 14 days. Young pike first feed on zooplankton, then soon switch to small fish. Fry remain in nursery areas until they are about two to three inches long, after which fingerlings move into deeper water to find larger prey and avoid cannibalism.
