Turn worn routes into paths, give toileting a designated spot, and choose play and planting areas that suit your dog’s habits as well as your climate, soil, drainage, and sun. These six ideas can be mixed and matched; no surface or plant is right for every yard or dog.
1. Turn your dog’s favorite route into a path
Watch where your dog runs, patrols, or cuts across the yard. Instead of repeatedly repairing the same worn strip, make that route intentional with flat stones or pavers. Johnson County K-State Research and Extension puts the principle simply: “Creating a dog friendly landscape takes observation and begins with thinking like a dog.” Its fact sheet recommends working with established paths and planting alongside them rather than directly on them.
Keep the route even and easy to walk on, and check that stones do not rock or leave awkward gaps. A path can reduce wear on nearby lawn and beds, but its surface should still suit your dog’s paws and the local heat and drainage conditions.
2. Make a designated potty area
A defined toileting spot can help protect lawn or shrubs from concentrated urine and make waste easier to find. Place it where your dog can reach it easily and where runoff will not create a drainage problem.

K-State Extension lists soft pea gravel, bricks, flagstone, wood mulch, and artificial turf over a gravel base as possible surfaces. Consider how each feels underfoot, how readily it drains, whether it is comfortable in hot weather, and how you will clean it. A surface that works for one dog may not suit a dog that chews, digs, or dislikes hard ground.
3. Keep some living green space
A resilient patch of turf or suitable ornamental grass gives a dog room to play and rest on a living surface. Choose species for your region, soil, sun exposure, and water availability rather than assuming a grass that thrives elsewhere will suit your yard.

Avoid foxtail grasses: their barbed seeds can lodge in a dog’s body. Before planting, confirm the plant’s identity and regional suitability; common names can refer to different plants, and ornamental grasses are not interchangeable from a safety or growing perspective.
4. Use grassless surfaces where they make sense
Pavers, gravel, woodchips, mulch, and synthetic turf can help in high-traffic or muddy areas, but each comes with trade-offs. Choose a material by considering paw comfort and temperature, drainage, cleanup and odor, durability under digging and traffic, and the chance your dog will chew or swallow it.

| Surface | Potential benefit | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Pavers | Can reduce digging and mud and create a durable route. | Can become hot in sun; uneven or loose pieces can be uncomfortable or unstable. |
| Gravel | Drains and cleans easily. | Can get hot, lodge in paws, or be swallowed. Choose a size and location with your dog’s behavior in mind. |
| Woodchips or mulch | Can cover bare ground and soften a defined area. | Chewed pieces can splinter or pose a choking risk. Avoid cocoa bean mulch in dog-accessible areas; it contains theobromine and caffeine. AKC identifies pine straw as a suitable alternative, but do not encourage dogs to eat it and supervise dogs that chew mulch. |
| Synthetic turf | Can avoid worn spots where natural grass struggles. | Needs regular rinsing to limit urine odor; consider heat and drainage when choosing its location. |
There is no universally best grassless material. For example, a surface that is easy to hose down may still be a poor choice if your dog mouths it or it becomes too hot in the sun.
5. Protect planting beds and check every plant
Raised beds, fencing, landscape edging, or containers placed out of reach can reduce digging and nibbling. Keep thorny plants and sharp seed heads away from routes your dog uses, and identify each plant before adding it to a dog-accessible area.

Check plant names against a dog-specific reference such as the ASPCA’s toxic and non-toxic plant list. The ASPCA notes that its list is not all-inclusive and that eating plant material can cause gastrointestinal upset even when a plant is categorized as non-toxic. AKC flags Japanese yew, azalea, and rhododendron as hazardous examples. If you are unsure what is growing in a bed, keep your dog away until you have identified it.

Give your dog a comfortable retreat with shade from a tree, gazebo, or umbrella, plus fresh water. Shade moves as the sun changes, so check the yard at different times of day before deciding where a resting spot belongs. A shallow dog pool can be another option; supervise your dog around pools and other water features.

Keep the whole yard safer
Secure the boundary
Choose a physical fence suited to your dog’s size and abilities, repair gaps, and account for digging. For a persistent digger, an underground barrier or a chicken-wire L-footer may help. Invisible fencing does not keep other animals out, so do not treat it as a substitute for a secure physical boundary. As Amy Attas, DVM, told AKC, invisible fencing can give “a false sense of security,” because it does not prevent other animals from accessing the yard.
Use garden products carefully
Read pesticide, fertilizer, and other garden-product labels and follow their directions. AKC advises keeping pets off pesticide-treated lawn until the product has completely dried. Avoid metaldehyde slug and snail bait, and keep dogs out of compost, particularly where mold may develop.
Watch for hazards and act promptly
Keep an eye out for mushrooms and garden debris, especially after rain or yard work. If your dog may have eaten something toxic or shows signs of poisoning, contact a veterinarian promptly. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control hotline is available 24 hours a day at (888) 426-4435.
