Japan’s BB102 is an automated wildlife-deterrence drone designed to scare birds and other animals away from agricultural sites. Developed by NTT e-Drone Technology, it combines red and green laser patterns with programmed flight routes. The company announced provision would begin on October 1, 2025.
It is a wildlife-control tool, not a proven treatment for avian influenza. Japanese government material describes laser drones as part of broader countermeasure work, but the available evidence does not show that BB102 itself prevents infection or replaces farm biosecurity.
What the BB102 laser drone is
BB102 is a purpose-built drone for deterring wildlife around poultry farms and other agricultural or livestock facilities. NTT e-Drone Technology says it can patrol an area automatically while projecting changing red and green laser light.
The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Council describes automated routes and laser deterrence for animals including crows, wild boar and deer. The system is intended to reduce unwanted wildlife presence, especially where animals gather on roofs, fields or other difficult-to-monitor locations.

How its automated deterrence works
Programmed patrol routes
An operator sets a flight area on the transmitter, allowing the drone to navigate a configured route rather than requiring continuous manual piloting. The route-based approach is suited to repeat patrols over a farm’s known wildlife access points.
Changing red and green laser patterns
According to NTT’s product description, BB102 randomly illuminates with red and green lasers and uses flicker. Varying the pattern is intended to make wildlife less likely to become accustomed to a predictable light.

- 【Automatic Bird Scarer】The core principle of the laser bird repellent is to leverage birds' natural instinct—they perceive bright, moving laser beams as physical danger or a predator's threat, inducing fear and causing them to flee the area. This offers an efficient, friendly, and User-Friendly bird control solution.
- 【360° Full Coverage】The powerful 360° pan-tilt dynamically scans and tracks birds within a 200-300 square meter area, eliminating blind spots. This multi-mode intelligent bird scarer features strong light oscillation and rapid flashing functions, effectively disrupting birds' nerves and repelling a variety of birds and small animals.
- 【Auto Cruise & Timing】360° pan-tilt control allows for dynamic scanning and flock tracking without blind spots. Set automatic cruise routes and multiple timers to meet your bird-repelling needs at different times of the day. Smart app control: Enable/disable or adjust bird-repelling modes anytime, anywhere.
- 【High-Quality Materials】The high-brightness laser penetrates rain and fog, providing long-distance visibility. The protective aluminum alloy housing boasts an IP66 waterproof rating, offering excellent resistance to water and dust. This ensures reliable operating under various weather conditions.
- 【Wide Applications】Utilizing laser technology to repel birds, it protects power plants, substations, airports, orchards, farms, monuments, buildings, stage lighting systems, wind turbines, power grids, photovoltaic systems, and more from bird infestations.
FPV inspection camera
The drone includes an FPV camera for checking roofs and other elevated areas. NTT’s announcement states that beyond-visual-line-of-sight flight is not permitted for the described camera use, so farms must account for the operating conditions and aviation rules that apply at their site.
What has been reported at poultry farms
A government-affiliated overview gives an example in which about 80 crows had gathered on a poultry-farm roof. It reports that the number declined after laser irradiation. The page does not provide a measured percentage reduction, a control comparison or how long the change lasted.

- Principle of bird chaser: RGB laser bird chaser is a technology that uses high-intensity color dynamic laser beam to scare birds away. Its principle is that birds see lasers as physical threats and avoid it
- 360° Dynamic Bird Tracking with Multi-Mode chaser: 360 rotating pan/tilt, dynamic scanning and tracking of bird flocks, no blind spots; Multi-mode intelligent bird chaser, strong light shock, interference with the bird's nervous system
- Customizable Timing & All-Weather Durability: Customizable bird repellent time, can set multiple sets of timer switches. Easy to operate; IP66 waterproof, super durable, stable operation, no fear of wind, rain or heat
- Scare Birds Away: Scare birds/mices/rabbits/squirrels away, include all birds, most animals, keep your homestead and surrounding, garden clean
- Application scenarios: RGB laser bird drive can be used in power stations, substations, airports, power stations, orchards, breeding farms, landmarks, buildings, scenic spot lighting, wind power equipment, power grid systems, photovoltaic equipment
NTT’s own solution material also presents a poultry-farm success example. That account is a vendor report rather than an independently described controlled trial, and it does not establish a long-term effect across farms, seasons or bird species.
Does a laser drone prevent bird flu?
There is no cited measurement showing that BB102 reduces avian-influenza incidence. Scaring crows or other wildlife away could support a farm’s effort to limit contact with buildings, feed and birds, but that is an indirect rationale, not demonstrated disease prevention.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries later listed a presentation about laser drones as an avian-influenza countermeasure. That shows institutional interest; it does not prove that the BB102 prevents infection. Farms still need their established biosecurity practices, including access control, hygiene, monitoring and veterinary guidance.

NTT describes two different deployment approaches. The better choice depends on where wildlife enters and whether the farm needs continuous coverage or a mobile response.

What farmers should verify before deployment
- Wildlife pattern: identify whether birds are roosting on roofs, entering sheds, feeding near bins or moving between several buildings.
- Flight permissions and safety: confirm the applicable Japanese aviation requirements, visual-line-of-sight conditions, launch and recovery zones, and procedures around workers, roads, power lines and livestock.
- Operating plan: establish who programs routes, supervises flights, checks the FPV feed and records wildlife activity before and after patrols.
- Biosecurity integration: treat deterrence as one layer alongside sanitation, exclusion, carcass and illness monitoring, and official veterinary instructions.
- Evidence and duration: measure the farm’s own bird counts over time rather than assuming that a short-term reduction will persist.
- Procurement details: ask NTT e-Drone Technology about availability, price, maintenance, training, insurance, operating limits and eligibility, because those details are not stated in the cited public pages.

Why the technology is attracting attention
Japan faces substantial wildlife pressure around agricultural production; NTT’s 2025 launch announcement cites approximately ¥20 billion in annual wildlife crop damage, attributing the figure to the agriculture ministry without identifying the statistical year in that statement. A mobile deterrent could be useful when animals shift between buildings or when a fixed device cannot cover the full problem area.
That practical appeal should not be confused with proof of disease-control performance. The strongest supported conclusion is narrower: BB102 is designed to deter wildlife, and Japanese institutions are examining laser-equipped drones as one possible tool around livestock facilities.
