Seven-year-old polar bear Baffin died after rough play with his longtime habitat mate, eight-year-old Siku, at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. The zoo’s necropsy found that Siku crushed Baffin’s trachea during play; Baffin is believed to have lost consciousness underwater and drowned. The zoo described the encounter as a tragic accident, not a deliberate attack.
What happened to Baffin?
On July 19, 2024, Baffin did not resurface from a pool at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. The zoo released the necropsy findings on July 23. An independent wildlife pathologist worked with the zoo’s Animal Health team on the examination, according to the zoo’s account of the results.
The necropsy determined that Siku caused a crushing injury to Baffin’s trachea during rough play. The zoo said Baffin is presumed to have lost consciousness underwater and then drowned. In other words, the reported sequence was a severe injury, unconsciousness, and drowning—not drowning alone as an unexplained event.
Was Siku attacking Baffin?
The zoo characterized the incident as an accident during behavior that was normal for the pair. Baffin and Siku had lived together first at Assiniboine Park Zoo in Manitoba and later in Calgary. They played daily in and out of the water, and caregivers said the type and intensity of play that day appeared no different from what they routinely observed.

Global News, carrying Canadian Press reporting, quoted senior veterinarian Sandie Black describing the play as “typical of how they play” and the injury as “a tragically misplaced grab.” Those descriptions support the zoo’s account of rough play rather than an intentional attack. They do not establish that the play was harmless: in this case, the injury was fatal.
Did heat or poor health contribute?
The necropsy found Baffin in excellent physical condition and reported no evidence of hyperthermia, or heat-related stress. The zoo’s findings therefore point to the crushing injury and subsequent drowning as the cause of death, rather than heat stress or an identified underlying health problem.

What is known—and what is not?
- Established by the zoo’s necropsy: Baffin was seven and Siku was eight; Siku caused the tracheal injury during rough play; Baffin is presumed to have lost consciousness underwater and drowned; and the examination found no hyperthermia.
- Behavioral context: The zoo said the bears played routinely and that the encounter seemed consistent with their usual play.
- Not established by the cited accounts: A broader rate of fatal injuries during polar-bear play or drownings. The available figures do not show how often such incidents occur, so this case should not be treated as evidence of a general frequency.
The zoo’s Director of Animal Care, Health & Welfare, Colleen Baird, said the findings were conclusive about the cause of death but offered little solace to the team that loved Baffin. The results explain the fatal sequence; they do not make the loss less tragic.
