Yes. Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) are freshwater fish and should be kept in freshwater aquariums, not marine saltwater. In nature they live in warm, shallow pools, streams, ditches and rice-field habitats in Southeast Asia. Their labyrinth organ lets them take air at the surface, but it does not make them saltwater fish or eliminate the need for clean, conditioned, well-maintained water.
What water do Siamese fighting fish need?
A betta aquarium should contain stable, heated freshwater. Use tap water only after treating it with a dechlorinator that neutralizes chlorine and chloramine. Untreated or chlorinated water can damage a fish’s gills and beneficial filter bacteria.
Published care sheets give slightly different target ranges. Treat these as practical guidelines rather than numbers to chase constantly; stability, a completed nitrogen cycle and regular testing matter more than forcing a single exact pH.
| Parameter | OATA guidance | RSPCA guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 20–28°C | 24–26°C ideal |
| pH | 6.0–8.0 | 6.5–7.5 ideal |
| Ammonia | 0 | Below 0.1 ppm |
| Nitrite | 0 | Below 0.2 ppm |
| Nitrate | No more than 20 mg/L above the level in normal tap water | Below 50 ppm |
| Hardness | 4–12°dH general hardness; 3–10°dKH carbonate hardness | Not stated |
OATA specifically recommends a freshwater test kit. RSPCA advises testing regularly and checking more often while a new aquarium’s nitrogen cycle is establishing.

- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Where do bettas live in the wild?
Betta splendens occupies shallow, warm freshwater environments in Southeast Asia. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2021 ecological screening compilation classifies the species as “freshwater; benthopelagic” and reports compiled environmental values of pH 6.0–8.0 and 24–30°C.
Habitat measurements can be more acidic and warmer than a broad species summary suggests. University of Florida IFAS describes a Thai habitat with pH 5.47 (approximately 5.28–5.80), an average temperature of 29.9°C (about 86°F), and average water depth of roughly 5 cm. The Fish and Wildlife Service compilation reports a breeding-season average of 29.9°C ± 1.4.

Wild water may be oxygen-poor or slow-moving, especially in shallow pools and flooded fields. That does not mean aquarium water should be stagnant or dirty.
How the labyrinth organ changes their breathing
A peer-reviewed care-and-use article describes bettas as anabantoids: fish with a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe air from the water’s surface. This adaptation helps them tolerate warm habitats with limited dissolved oxygen.

Surface breathing is an adaptation, not a substitute for filtration or maintenance. Ammonia and nitrite remain toxic, and decaying waste can foul water even when a betta appears able to breathe normally. Provide gentle circulation, leave clear access to the surface and keep the water chemically safe.
Can a betta live in tap water?
It can live in tap water after that water is properly conditioned and tested. Municipal supplies vary in chlorine or chloramine concentration, pH and hardness, so never assume water is safe simply because it is drinkable for people.

- Fill with tap water and add a freshwater dechlorinator according to the product’s label for the full volume being treated.
- Run the filter and heater. Set the heater to a stable tropical temperature within your chosen care range; avoid rapid temperature swings.
- Cycle the aquarium before adding the fish. Use a test kit to verify that ammonia and nitrite are at the target levels and that nitrate is controlled.
- Test during setup and maintenance. Check ammonia and nitrite whenever the tank is new, after cleaning problems, or when the fish behaves unusually.
- Perform regular partial water changes. Match replacement water’s temperature, condition it before use and avoid replacing all the water at once unless emergency circumstances require a different plan.
If your source water is unusually hard, soft or far outside the published pH guidance, ask an aquatic veterinarian or experienced fish professional before altering it. Sudden chemistry changes can be more dangerous than a stable value that is not “perfect.”

Temperature stability
Bettas are tropical fish. A small adjustable aquarium heater, monitored with a thermometer, is generally more reliable than relying on room temperature, which can fluctuate overnight or seasonally.

Ammonia and nitrite control
These nitrogen compounds are the first water-quality checks to make. A reading above the recommended level calls for investigating overfeeding, decaying material, inadequate biological filtration or an unfinished cycle rather than adding salt as a routine fix.
Gentle flow
RSPCA guidance recommends low flow. Bettas with long fins can struggle in strong currents, so use an adjustable filter, baffle the outlet or choose a low-flow design while still providing adequate filtration.
Testing equipment
A freshwater liquid or strip test kit that measures ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH is a practical first purchase. Test results are more useful than guessing from water clarity, because clear water can still contain dangerous ammonia or nitrite.
Do bettas need aquarium salt or saltwater?
No. Saltwater is not an equivalent housing option for B. splendens; the species is freshwater. Aquarium salt may have limited, situation-specific uses under professional guidance, but adding salt routinely does not convert a freshwater betta setup into a suitable marine environment and should not replace water testing, conditioning or maintenance.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention summarizes the basic distinction plainly: “Most fish live in either saltwater or freshwater, not both.” For questions about a particular aquarium, the CDC advises asking a veterinarian about setup, water treatment, filtration and maintenance.
