Best Single Fish for an Aquarium: Why a Betta Is the Clear Choice

One betta—usually a male kept alone—is the strongest choice for a single-fish aquarium, provided you supply a heated, filtered and furnished tank rather than a bowl.

For a genuinely single-fish aquarium, choose one Betta splendens (Siamese fighting fish), usually a male kept alone. Male bettas cannot share an aquarium with one another because they fight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A betta is not a bowl pet, however: it needs a heated, filtered and furnished aquarium with stable water quality.

Why a betta suits a one-fish aquarium

Bettas are one of the clearest choices when you want to keep one fish rather than a school or community. A male can live alone, so you do not have to buy a group to meet a social requirement. The CDC warns that male bettas cannot be kept together because they will fight. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) also notes that keeping a betta alone does not reduce its care needs: it still requires an appropriate aquarium and adequate filtration.

That combination—one fish, no required shoal and a well-established care routine—makes a betta a practical single-fish choice. It does not make the fish maintenance-free.

How much space does one betta need?

Tank size How to interpret it
2.5 gallons (about 9.5 L) PetMD’s lower care-sheet baseline. Treat this as a minimum, not an ideal target.
About 5 gallons (19 L) or more A practical home target that gives the fish room to swim and makes temperature and water chemistry easier to keep stable.
10 gallons (38 L) or more PetMD’s ideal-size guidance; the extra volume provides greater stability and room for plants, cover and swimming space.
5.6 L A peer-reviewed welfare study’s minimum recommendation for display and sale. The same study says home tanks should be larger than this.

Skip bowls and tiny decorative containers. Small volumes change temperature and water chemistry quickly, leave little room for effective filtration and cannot provide the furnishings recommended for good welfare. A larger, longer aquarium is generally easier to manage than a tall container with the same volume.

Equipment for a single-betta aquarium

  • Secure lid: Bettas can jump, so cover the aquarium while leaving room for normal air exchange.
  • Adjustable heater: Keep the water in the tropical range recommended by Aqueon, 76–85 °F (about 24–29 °C). Use a heater sized for the tank and verify the result with a thermometer.
  • Thermometer: Check the actual water temperature rather than relying only on the heater setting.
  • Gentle-flow filter: Filtration is required, but strong current can exhaust a betta. Choose an adjustable or baffled outlet if the fish struggles to swim.
  • Water conditioner: Treat tap water before it enters the aquarium.
  • Freshwater test kit: Test water quality as part of routine care, especially while the aquarium is becoming biologically established or after a problem.
  • Substrate and furnishings: Gravel, live or artificial plants and floating cover provide exploration, shelter and resting areas. Avoid sharp decor that can tear fins.

Setting up the tank before the fish arrives

  1. Place the aquarium on a level, stable stand away from direct sun, drafts and heat sources.
  2. Add rinsed substrate and smooth furnishings, leaving open swimming space. Include broad leaves or other safe areas near the surface where a betta can rest.
  3. Install the heater, thermometer and gentle-flow filter, then fit the lid.
  4. Fill with tap water treated with water conditioner and bring it to 76–85 °F.
  5. Establish the aquarium’s biological filtration before stocking when possible. Test the water regularly and do not add the fish if test results show unsafe conditions.

A furnished aquarium matters for more than appearance. The welfare study found that tank size and furnishings affect betta behavior and welfare, and recommends home tanks larger than its 5.6-L display-and-sale minimum.

Can a betta live alone?

Yes. A single betta can be kept alone, and a male is the most straightforward choice for this setup. Never place two male bettas in the same aquarium; the CDC specifically warns that they fight. OATA says males should be kept alone or only with very placid tank mates, but adding companions is not necessary to meet the needs of a one-fish aquarium and introduces compatibility risk.

Tetra LED Half Moon 1.1 Gallon Fish Tank Kit for Betta Fish
  • HALF MOON AQUARIUM KIT: Clear plastic, half-moon-shaped front allows for unobstructed viewing.
  • IDEAL FOR BETTAS: Bettas require minimal maintenance and make great species for beginners.

  • CONVENIENT FEEDING: Clear canopy has a hole to make feeding fish easy.
  • PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS: Small aquariums like this 1.1-gallon tank are a great way to get started in the freshwater fishkeeping hobby.

If your priority is one fish with the fewest social-management decisions, keep one betta by itself and concentrate on water quality, temperature, gentle filtration and enrichment.

Is a bowl acceptable?

A bowl is not a suitable long-term home. It commonly lacks a heater, effective filtration, a secure lid and enough volume for stable conditions. The 2.5-gallon baseline and the larger 5-gallon-or-more home target both point toward a proper aquarium rather than a bowl. Even one fish produces waste, and a small unfiltered container can deteriorate rapidly.

AQUANEAT Fish Tank, 1 Gallon Betta Fish Tank, Small Aquarium Kit with LED Light and Water Filter Pump
  • Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
  • Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
  • Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
  • Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
  • Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)

Routine care for one betta

  • Check temperature and observe the fish daily for normal swimming, appetite and breathing.
  • Test water quality on a regular schedule and whenever behavior or appearance changes.
  • Perform partial water changes using conditioned, temperature-matched water according to your test results and maintenance routine.
  • Keep the filter running and maintain it without destroying all biological media at once.
  • Remove uneaten food and debris promptly, while avoiding overfeeding.
  • Inspect plants and decorations for sharp edges, and keep the lid secure after every maintenance session.

Exact water-change frequency depends on tank volume, filtration, stocking, feeding and test results; test data is more useful than a fixed calendar alone.

When another fish might be a better fit

The available evidence supports bettas as the clearest recommendation for a single-fish aquarium, not as a complete ranking of every aquarium species. If you are considering an alternative, compare these points before buying:

A fish that is peaceful in a store display may still need a larger tank, companions or different water conditions at home. Choose the species whose adult needs match the aquarium you can maintain, rather than choosing solely by small size or appearance.

A sensible shopping list

For one betta, look for a 5 gallon betta aquarium kit with heater and filter, then verify that the included heater is appropriate for the tank and that the filter can run at a gentle flow. Add a thermometer, freshwater test kit, water conditioner, smooth substrate and safe plants or cover. A 10-gallon aquarium is an even more forgiving choice if you have the space.
